Nairn Centre crash claims two lives
On March 10 at approximately 3:45 pm, members from the Espanola/Sudbury Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Nairn-Hyman Fire Department and the Greater Sudbury Fire Department as well as the Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board Emergency Medical Services (EMS), responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 17 east of Nairn Centre.
The driver of the pick-up truck, 32-year-old Christopher Brule of Webbwood, was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the passengers in the pickup truck, nine-day-old Trystan Brule of Webbwood, has also died as a result of his injuries. A second passenger of the pickup truck, 32-year-old Ashley-Carole Richer of Webbwood, remains in hospital where she is being treated for serious injuries. The driver of the 10 ton truck, 62-year-old Claude Laforest of Sudbury, was also transported to hospital and has since been released.
The collision remains under investigation and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
Man charged with threatening in domestic disturbance
In the late evening of March 6, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a 911 call from a witness reporting a disturbance at a residence in Gordon Township.
Police attended the scene and a man was arrested following an investigation. No injuries were reported to any of the involved parties.
A 35-year-old Gordon Township man has been charged with uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
The male was released from custody. He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on May 9 in Gore Bay.
Man charged following domestic disturbance
On March 7, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a domestic disturbance at a residence in Carnarvon Township.
Following the investigation, police arrested a 46-year-old Carnarvon Township man. He has been charged with three counts of assault, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada, and one count of mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
The male has been remanded into custody pending a bail hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice on March 10 in Gore Bay.
Shoplifters arrested at Espanola grocery store
Since February 19, the Espanola Police Service have responded to three separate shoplifting occurrences at an Espanola grocery store, charging four individuals with theft under $5,000.
On February 19 at 4:10 pm, a 38-year old male and 35-year old female, both of Wikwemikong, were arrested by a staff member at the grocery store after they exited without paying for $400 in sundry items that they’d attempted to conceal in two reusable shopping bags. Upon police arrival, the pair were charged with theft under $5,000 and will appear in Espanola Court on April 10.
On February 24 at 2:20 pm, the Espanola Police Service received a complaint from a local grocery store advising that a male patron had just been caught shoplifting food items valued at $72. Police attended and charged the 27-year-old resident of Espanola with one count of theft under $5,000. He will appear in Espanola Court on April 10.
On March 3 at 2:30 pm, the Espanola Police Service responded to another complaint of a shoplifter, and upon arrival, discovered that a 38-year-old female from Espanola had attempted to steal $85 in sundry items from the store. She was charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and will appear in Espanola Court on April 10.
In addition to receiving a criminal charge, which could result in a criminal record, the four individuals were also trespassed from entering any grocery store, associated to the grocery store chain.
UCCM Police host series of ‘lunch and learn’ sessions
The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service and the Social Navigator Initiative has just recently kicked off a series of Lunch and Learns with the six First Nation communities that they police. The Lunch and Learns are held in each community, and are an information and awareness session offered to community members regarding important issues involving violence prevention.
Due to a rise in these related occurrences, the UCCM Police decided to take a pro-active approach towards violence prevention, domestic violence, and being a good neighbour was the first presentation offered. The next two topics offered will be on sexual assault and bullying/lateral violence.
