A roundup of next week’s fun and activities on the Island
MANITOULIN—With March Break starting this weekend, many families will consider heading off-Island for entertainment, but you don’t need to travel far to find family fun—there are lots of activities happening across Manitoulin.
In the Northeast Town, there will be free skating daily from Monday, March 13 to Friday, March 17 from 12 to 2 pm.
There will be also daily ‘vacation spot’ themed days (Mexico, New Orleans, Hawaii, New York and Ireland) with crafts, games and snacks for $2 from 10 am to noon at the Little Current Recreation Centre.
In Manitowning, there will be a kids’ art classes daily at the arena, Monday to Thursday morning, from 10 am to 12 pm for children eight years and older for $10 each with Madonna Aeshlimann. Call 705-859-3196 to register.
There will be a free public skate at the Manitowaning Arena from 1 to 3 pm donated by the Manitowaning Minor Hockey Association on Monday, followed by a kids’ hockey tournament: 6:30 to 7:30 pm for tyke/novice age; and 7:30 to 8:30 pm for atom/peewee age. The cost is $2 for the tournament and full equipment is required.
On the evening of Tuesday, March 14 at the arena there will be a barn board art for kids class from 7 to 9 pm for $2 for children ages four and up, a create a 3D tree class from 7 to 8 pm for $2 for kids four-years-old and up and a ‘create a bunny cake’ class for kids nine years and up for $5 from 7 to 8 pm, all at the Manitowaning Arena.
On Wednesday, March 15 there will be a public skate from 1 to 3:30 pm. There will also be an adult painting class from 1 to 3:30 pm for $30 at the Assiginack Public Library.
Wednesday kids’ activities will include: cupcake decorating (four-years-old and up) for $2 from 7 to 8 pm; candle making (four-years-old and up) for $3 from 7 to 8 pm; and build a beaded bracelet with ring (seven-years-old and up) from 7 to 8 pm for $4.
Thursday there will be a evening movie from 7 to 9 pm.
The week will wrap up in Assiginack with public skates on Friday from 6:30 to 8 and Saturday from 1 to 3 pm.
In Aundeck Omni Kaning (AOK), there will be a science day at the Four Directions Complex on Thursday, March 16 from 10 am to 3 pm for kids six-years-old and up. Kids under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult.
On Friday, March 17, the AOK Community Centre will host a fruit sculpturing workshop from moms and tots on Friday, March 17 from 1 to 3 pm.
On Friday night there will be a pajama party movie night at the Four Directions Complex from 3 to 6 pm for children six and up (children under six must be accompanied by an adult).
4elements Living Arts will be running a River School, which will include river science and artmaking. The program will be held from 10 am to 3 pm in Kagawong at the Park Centre on Wednesday, March 15, at the Gore Bay Hall on Thursday, March 16 and at the Little Current Recreation Centre on Friday, March 17. Many local First Nation youth will be among the record number of participants in this year’s Little NHL tournament being held in Mississauga. Good look to the Anishinaabek youth who will be carrying Manitoulin’s banner and making their communities proud.
