MINDMEOYA—The Central Manitoulin Public School girls’ volleyball team played two tournaments, December 7 and 8, winning the Island tournament undefeated and placing third out of 19 teams in Sudbury.
In Sudbury the girls would start every game a bit behind after losing their first serve, but came back strong. The girls played four games in their pool and won all of them taking first place in their pool with a perfect eight points.
Next, the girls played their first playoff game, winning the game handily. The girls then went on to win their quarterfinal game against Valleyview. In the girls’ third game in the semifinals they were very close with the other team but Chelmsford ended up coming out ahead 25-23 to knock CMPS out of the tournament. Although the girls were a little bit disappointed that they lost the game, they were happy to have made it so far in the Rainbow District School Board tournament.
In Little Current (the Island tournament) the CMPS girls played five teams one game each. In the beginning of every game the girls started off slow, behind by approximately two points then started to catch up by having many good serves. Slowly but surely, the CMPS team regained their strength and came back strong winning each game by an average of 13 points, taking home the Island championship trophy with 125 points for them and only 59 points against them, and claiming their well deserved first place.
When asked what she thought the team did well, team captain Hailey McGillis-Prior answered, “We had good communication skills and we had a lot of setting. We also controlled our bumps.”
Next up for the team is the co-ed volleyball tournament in Wikwemikong on January 19.
