Ice Chips

The Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves have been awarded the 2018 Canadian AAA Midget Championships. They won the gold in 2008 in Arnprior. This year (2017) they will host the Central Regional Championships with the winner travelling to Prince George, British Columbia for the Telus Cup. Little Current’s Braeden Case is a stalwart on defense for the present Wolves. Playing defense at six feet, 176lbs, Braeden is a swift-skating stay-at-home defenseman who is the consummate team player. By the way, the Wolves are advertising for 2 forwards who they must sigh by January 10, not much time.

Jerry J. Debassige and his hard working group of volunteers carried off another successful “Family Cup Tournament” in M’Chigeeng over the holidays. Congrats to War Laur’s Fun-Jam on winning the A championships and to Mr. Debassige for his tireless work.

Here’s a shout out to Kiara Dokis Recollet of Birch Island/Whitefish River. The daughter of Veronica Recollet, Kiara is a member of the Sudbury Northern High School Braves where she anchors the defense.  Her team recently completed in a High School Tournament in Petawawa (The town was the subject of the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Home Town Hockey this past Sunday evening.)

Former Little Current Flyer and Manitoulin Panther J.R. Clarke continues his love for “the game.” J.R. has two sons in competitive hockey; one is a goalie, the other a skater. Good luck to Deakon and Colby as they climb the hockey ladder. Dad J.R. was a hardworking winger who played all 185 feet of the rink.  The ‘never-say-die’ teammate also had a scoring touch. Hats off to John Robert for keeping the Clarkes a hockey family!

A product of the Wikwemikong Hawks and Sudbury Lady Wolves, Aurora Ominika Enosse, recently had a hat-trick game for the North York Lady Storm in a 7-5 victory. Aurora now attends school in Toronto.

Sladen Peltier has completed his portion of the movie “Indian Horse” where he plays the lead role as a 9-10 year old. His section of the film took him close to 3 months to complete. Once done, he resumed his normal schedule, where he competed in the Ottawa Bell Capital Cup Tournament where he immediately picked up a “player of the game” award. Sladen plays for the West End Atom Ice Hawks where he is a strong offensive threat. This lad has a lot of energy!

The Paul and Koreen Lewis Family of Wikwemikong has long been strong hockey advocates. They still have a daughter Dana playing goal for both the Sudbury Lake Wolves and the High School St. Charles College Cardinals. So now they have moved on to the grandchildren. They travelled to the Gatineau/Alymer P.Q. area to take in Tyke Mya’s tournament. Paul made a promise to the young girl prior to the games that if she scored a goal he would construct on outdoor rink for her. Fortunately or unfortunately, (depending on your viewpoint), Mya smiled all the way to a 5 goal tournament total! This included a goal in the Championship game, which they won. True to this word, Paul was up to 2:30 am when they returned from Gatineau, freezing his feet as little miss plays for the Gatineau Les Tournades (Tornados). The tourney was the Festival M.A.H.G. en Fete 2016. Still more travelling to do Paul and Koreen!

Kelly Babstock continues to shine with her professional NWHL team, the Connecticut Whale. The former Division One, player of the year (203 point in 147 games with Quinnipiac University) Kelly has picked up 12 points in 8 games divided evenly between goals and assists.

Owen Case, Sault Ste. Marie AAA Minor PeeWee (son of Matt and Leanne Case), plays forward in the Northern Ontario AAA league. In his most recent games (December 17), they won two and tied one vs. the North Bay Trappers in North Bay.

Mustang minute

The Mustang senior girls’ volleyball-ball team opened their season with games at MSS. The girls played very well ending the day with a 3 and 1 record.  The team was led by the impressive hitting and defence of Kristina Renwick and Lyric Peltier as well as some outstanding serving by Delaney Madore. A good effort by the whole team which includes Nekoma Naokwegijig, Jessica Marshall, Bethany Wesno, Lauren Rohn, Jackie Cooper, Nea Saunders and Brianna Callaghan.
