Case hoists Big Nickel!
Congratulations to Little Current’s Braeden Case, who along with his teammates on the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves, captured the AAA Midget title of the highly touted Big Nickel Tournament. They did it in fine fashion to boot with a shoot-out victory against the No. 5 nationally, ranked Toronto Nationals! Keep up the hard work, Braeden.
Young runner completes half-marathon
Congratulations to Haylee Cress and her mother Heather Eismont who ran in the Road2Hope half-marathon in Hamilton over the weekend. Haylee, a Grade 8 student at CMPS, has been so dedicated to her training for a few years now but once she and her mom decided to complete a half-marathon, her commitment ramped-up even more! The pair could be seen running at 6 am before school and then she would also complete the cross-country work-out at school.
With so many training runs together, Haylee also wanted to finish together despite her mom urging to take off and run her own pace! They did, however, beat their goal time finishing in 2:40 and now have a PB for other races! As it turns out, Haylee was the absolute youngest runner of nearly 1,500 starters and had such a good experience, she is now planning her next run!
Tallman 2nd in 10k
Still with running, how about Emma Tallman, who ran the Angus Glen 10k Sunday in Markham with a lightning fast time of 37:16 (that is 3:43/minute, pace)! She was second overall out of 397 participants and the second female to cross the line.
Ice chips
Former OHL and Quebec League Major Hockey player Dylan Callaghan of Little Current has recently joined the NOJHL’s Rayside-Balfour Canadians. Dylan will bring some heavy hitting and a scoring touch to the Rayside squad. He joins Wikwemikong’s Ronson Odjig who patrols the blue-line for the Canadians.
Former Manitoulin Panther and MSS Mustang Thomas Hayden picked up a pair of points for the Espanola Express of the NOJHL Jr. A on Saturday in a losing cause against the Timmins Rock.
Another Jr A player with Island connections, Bo Peltier, chipped in an assist in a weekend victory for his Powassan Voodoos which is one of this season’s more powerful NOJHL teams. They are the No. 1 farm-team of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion.
Wikwemikong’s Carson Shawana starred on defence in Chicago this past weekend. Carson, a product of the Wiky Hawks and Manitoulin Panthers, now plays for the Nickel City AAA PeeWee Sons who attended the major AAA tournament which included 40 teams in their division alone. The Sons opened the tourney with a 7-2 win over the Chicago AAA PeeWee Hawks. Young Shawana was the star of this contest as he picked up 4 assists from his defensive post and was recognized with the Hardest Worker award. The Sons reeled off 6 straight victories to gain a spot in the championship final. Although they scored a ton of goals to that point they came up flat against the Cleveland, Ohio Lumberjacks losing 3-0. But hey, 2nd out of 40 is still amazing. Congrats Carson and teammates. The lads also were rewarded with tickets to the NHL Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night!
In Manitoulin Panthers hockey this weekend the Atoms won a close one over the Nickel City Devils by a 4-3 count. Meanwhile, the PeeWees maintained their season winning streak with a pair of wins: 4-0 over Nickel City Sons Major Atoms and 5-3 over the Nickel City PeeWee Bruins. Unfortunately, the rebuilding bantams dropped games to Copper Cliff and the Nickel City Sons. The Panthers Association has quite a good overall winning percentage to date and have a good chance to win a championship or two. Good job coaches, players and parents.
Football alive on Manitoulin!
The annual flag-football invitational took place a couple of weeks ago at Assiginack public school. Little Current P.S., Assiginack, and C.C. McLean each had two teams entered. The CCM Colts No. 1 defeated LCPS 1 in overtime to win the championship Golden Football.
Congratulations to the winning roster for Colts No. 1: Michael Bailey, Teah Migwans, Tyannah Witty, Jacob Kennedy, Ayriell Nodecker, Bailey Yaschuk-Middaugh, Trent Bell, Jonathen Deremo, Logan Sampson, Lexxie Fawcett and Coach Dan Smith. Thanks to Manitowaning’s Jeremy Mailloux for organizing a fun-filled, day of football.
Curling fundraiser now open for registration

Fitness group announcement
The Wiky fitness Group announces “Archery for Beginners” for those aged 20 plus held at the Wasse-Abin High Gym. These classes will on from 6-7 pm on Tuesdays during November. There also will be Women’s Open Hockey at the Thunderdome On Wednesdays (7-8 pm) during November. Contact Mary Mishibinijima for more information about these events.
