SUDBURY—Manitoulin’s own Ivan Wheale is the November artist at Artists on Elgin in Sudbury with the show ‘Lake Huron Stillness,’ an exploration of Lake Huron in 10 oil paintings, from November 1 to 29.
“The title of the exhibition, ‘Lake Huron Stillness,’ represents the peace and solitude of Northern Ontario’s unique landscapes, specifically Lake Huron,” a press release from Artists on Elgin states. “Featuring wild landscapes, lakes, shorelines, rocks and driftwood, Mr. Wheale’s high realism captures the atmosphere, shape and texture of the local terrain.”
“Ivan Wheale is one of the most successful and recognizable artists in Northern Ontario,” the gallery press release continues. “He was born in Sunderland, England in 1934 and settled in Sudbury in 1957. Shortly after, Ivan moved to Manitoulin Island, where he still resides. Throughout his career, Ivan has held nearly 100 solo exhibitions and his work has been exhibited in over 60 group collections. His works hang in more than 40 public and corporate collections, including the Royal Collection and the Dean’s Collection at Windsor Castle, the Government of Ontario and the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. His numerous accolades include an Honourary Degree LLD from Laurentian University, the Rotary International Paul Harris Award and awards from the Ontario Ministry of Culture, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council.”
The opening reception for ‘Lake Huron Stillness’ tales place at Artists on Elgin, 168 Elgin Street, Sudbury, on Saturday, November 5 from 1 to 4 pm. The exhibition is on from November 1 to 29 with the gallery open from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm.
