ESPANOLA – On October 1, 2016 at 10:30 p.m., a member of the Espanola Police Service on patrol on Second Street observed a male and female standing on the sidewalk talking. The officer noticed that between them on the sidewalk was a can of beer, and stopped to speak to the two individuals. While engaging the male in conversation, the officer noted the odour of alcohol on the male’s breath, and determined that based on the cold partially filled can of beer at the male’s feet, and the odour of alcohol on his breath, that he was violating the Liquor Licence Act. The officer searched the male for additional alcohol, and in his back pack, the officer located an additional 8 unopened beers; a knife capable of being opened by centrifugal force; 5 Methamphetamine tablets; and indicia of trafficking in a controlled substance.
As a result of the incident, the 26-year old resident of Espanola was charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and failing to comply with an undertaking. He was further charged under the Liquor Licence Act with having an open container of alcohol in a public place. He will appear in Espanola Court on November 7, 2016, to answer to his charges.
