Town to investigate possibility of installing splash pad in Gore Bay

GORE BAY—The Town of Gore Bay is going to investigate the idea of installing a splash pad at an area in town and will seek support from local groups and service clubs and funding agencies.

Gore Bay Mayor Ron Lane noted that at a recent town recreation committee meeting a recommendation was made to investigate the possibility of installing a splash pad at the park area by the basketball courts, including possible partnerships and funding opportunities. A budget of $100,000 had been suggested for the project, with donations being sought, and possible partnering with a local service club to fundraise.

The committee was concerned about the high cost involved with planning, design, installation, water usage and ongoing long-term maintenance. However, the committee agreed it would be a great addition to the community. They felt it was warranted researching it further to determine cost and possibilities of funding.

“I think the area by the tennis courts would be a better location (for a splash pad),” Mayor Lane told council at a meeting last week. “There is a water supply there and it is closer to the playground (for younger children) to use, and there is the parking lot nearby as well,” said Mayor Lane. “And it is a busier area so may attract more people.”

While agreeing the area by the tennis court is not a bad location, Councillor Dan Osborne said that he also felt there is a lot of activity around that specific area and that it might be a little congested to fit a splash pad in as well.

“There is no room at the playground,” said Mayor Lane. “I was thinking a good area would be east of the tennis courts, with the boardwalk and parking lot close by.” He noted as well, “there is a water supply and electricity accessible in that area.”

Councillor Kevin Woestenenk agreed, “we could get water and electrical there.”

“Didn’t we have long-term plan for the area and were looking at eventually moving the ballpark down there? There is a lot of activity in the (tennis court) area already,” said Councillor Larry Eirikson.

Councillor Osborne noted, “there is nothing wrong with doing some research in looking at how much it costs and if there is any funding available and any interest from other groups to help out. Then we could determine where it (splash pad) could be located. The splash pad is a good idea.”

“Perhaps this is something the committee can investigate further and bring back recommendations to council,” added Mayor Lane, with council agreeing to have the committee investigate this further.
