GORDON—Since opening the last week of July, the mother-daughter operating team at Liips food stop located just outside of Gore Bay has had a good following, becoming particularly well known for their burgers.
“We had been talking about opening a food truck for quite awhile and one day we happened upon one while coming home through Mindemoya,” said Ms. Sarah Liipere. “We have worked well together in the past and were excited about the idea.”
“We have always liked to take care of people and wanted to create a menu that made sure people got a good meal for a fair price and didn’t go away hungry,” says Cheryl Lauzon. “One of the great things about running Liips is that we get to see so many people, local friends as well as tourists.”
Sarah commented, “we have seen a lot of return customers and are thrilled to see people enjoying our food. We are looking forward to the next spring and summer season but are enjoying playing with new menu ideas, contests and renovating little by little.”
“The hamburgers seem to be a signature item,” Cheryl noted. “Our double bacon cheeseburger is mammoth, we love seeing the look on people’s faces when they get one for the first time.”
There are cheeseburgers, homemade veggie burgers, sausages, foot long hot dogs, bacon wrapped hot dogs, bacon wrapped chili cheese dog, grilled cheese with tomato and bacon, BLT, chicken fingers and a chicken finger sandwich, large and small fries with gravy, homemade chili, poutine, bacon poutine, bacon chili cheese fries, bacon wrapped dill pickles, and four kinds of homemade taquitos, curry samosa, pepperoni pizza, black bean and quinoa and jalapeno with cream cheese.
There are also a variety of drink choices including mango juice and apple juice on the menu as well as a dessert menu that will bring out your inner child; deep fried Oreos, Reese’s, viva puffs or the deep fried butter tart, which comes dressed in whipped cream and caramel sauce.
“We also provide water and treats for our furry friends so that dog owners can enjoy bringing their pets,” said Sarah.
As for the unique name of the business, Liips, Ms. Lauzon explained that is derived from the Liipere surname and the nickname “Baby Liips,” that Ms. Liipere had as a child.
Liips is open seven days a week in the summer and is closed Tuesdays in the fall and spring. Their hours are 11:30 am until 8 pm.
For the week of rifle season on Manitoulin, Liips will be offering specials where customers can call in a day ahead to order a pot of chili, soup or stew with buns to take back to their hunt camp.
Liips will be running contests and lunch specials this fall and into the new year. You can follow them on their Facebook page @LiipsManitoulin for contests, closures and more.
