LITTLE CURRENT—Two new bar stools at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 177 bear bronze plaques in memory of the late Harold Morphet, a long time Legion supporter and popular community member known for his quick wit and gentle humour.
Family and friends gathered at the Legion bar in Little Current for a September 29 unveiling ceremony, including his sister Dorothy Hudson, his wife Brenda, children and grandchildren.
“Harold was an amazing person who did so much for the Legion and veterans,” said Legion Secretary Linda Bowerman, who acted as master of ceremonies for the unveiling. “We wanted to find a way to properly thank Harold for remembering the Legion,” she said. “We needed to replace some of the bar stools and we thought this would be a wonderful way to keep his memory alive.”
Mr. Morphet had requested that donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 177 be made as part of his funeral.
“My dad was a very big supporter of the Legion and the veterans,” said daughter Melanie Cortez. “He wasn’t a veteran himself, or much of one for taking on offices, but he always made it a point to make it out to any of their events or whatever they did and the Legion was a big part of his life.”
As to the choice of bar stools as a memorial, Ms. Cortez didn’t hesitate. “I thought it was pretty cool,” she said. “Dad was always there playing pool.”
Mr. Morphet could often be found holding court with friends and neighbours and his ready wit and pithy quips were legendary.
“If you made a wisecrack at Harold he could would have a snappy comeback faster than you could blink,” laughed Michael Shain. “He was a one of a kind.”
