Island theatre group supports member and raises funds for cancer research

By Marie Buie

SUDBURY—This is the fifth year that Burns Wharf Theatre Players have taken part in the CIBC Run for the Cure in support of myself, Mary Buie, one of their members who had breast cancer diagnosed in September 2012.

This year Brenda Chapman of Manitowaning joined the Players and Heather Theijsmeijer of Kagawong ran herself for the seventh year.

Run for the Cure was taking place all over Canada at the same time, as October is designated as Breast Cancer research month. We all know people who have had breast cancer or have died from it.

There have been tremendous strides in research so that the tumours, in some cases, can be targeted specifically instead of flooding the body with chemicals or exposing people to radiation.

The Buie children and their families took part in the Run in Calgary and North Bay.

The Circle of Hope support group for women with cancer has continued to operate on a Sunday afternoon in Kagawong monthly throughout the year.

Let’s hope that research funding will eradicate breast cancer in the future.
