SHEGUIANDAH—Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah curator Lisa Hallaert knows very well that there are more works entered into the annual Manitoulin Fine Arts Association Exhibit, she hung each and every one of them.
“It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun too,” she said. “I know from talking with the MFAA members that there are more entries this year.”
The pieces cover a wide range of mediums and there is something for just about anyone (and their pocketbook) on display.
Artist Donna Karnerva was on hand for the opening on Saturday, October 24 and was delighted to see a red dot already on the tag of one of her works.
“I usually work in pastels, although I have been exploring oils lately,” she said. Ms. Kanerva is a regular contributor to the LaCloche Art Show and has been fortunate (perhaps more accurately talented enough) to have made it into the show for the last seven years. “It is not easy to get a work in,” she admitted. “The competition has become very stiff.”
Artist Lorraine Loranger was also at the opening. “Isn’t this great,” she said, referencing the works on display. “There are so many talented people here on Manitoulin.”
A stalwart Manitoulin Art Tour member, Ms. Loranger has taken to keeping her home studio open to visitors all through the year. “It’s nice to meet people,” she said, adding with a laugh, “the downside is you really have to stay on top of the housework.”
“It would be nice if more artists on Manitoulin were to do that,” said artist Marian Barnett. “That would really put Manitoulin on the art map for the region.”
The MFAA Art Exhibit will run through until October 15 and the museum is open Thursday to Monday from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
