Trial date set for man charged in death of Island elder

M’CHIGEENG—A trial date has now been set for Kimel Corbiere, who was charged with first degree murder in the death of John Panamick of M’Chigeeng over two years ago.

Kimel Corbiere’s first degree murder trial will get underway on November 29, 2016.

The Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported at the time that Mr. Corbiere, 26 at the time, assaulted John Panamick, 70, at Mr. Panamick’s residence on Back Street in M’Chigeeng First Nation on May 11, 2014 between 7 and 11 pm.

Mr. Panamick was later discovered by a neighbour who contacted paramedics. Mr. Panamick was taken to hospital, but died of his injuries on June 13, 2014.

The United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe (UCCM) Police and the OPP North East Region Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Tracy Dobbin of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, arrested Mr. Corbiere and charged him with one count of first-degree murder in mid-July 2014.

Mr. Corbiere has been in prison for the past two years awaiting his trial date. Three weeks has been set aside for the trial.
