Meldrum Bay hosts 38th annual beef barbecue

MELDRUM BAY—The annual Meldrum Bay beef barbecue is one of those events that is unique to Manitoulin Island and brings visitors and family members from all over together for the long weekend.

“It was a great day and the weather was perfect, as it has been the entire summer,” stated Peggy Morrison, one of the organizers of the annual event.

This year marked the 38th annual beef barbecue, held this past Saturday. Dale and Scott Van Every could be found early Saturday morning preparing and barbecuing the over 100 pounds of beef that was served at the supper held that evening.

Archie and George Cadden led the kitchen brigade in cooking and selling hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch.

There were lots of entrants in the ring toss contest which was followed by children’s games during the afternoon. “There were lots of kids around,” said Ms. Morrison. She pointed out draws and prizes were held in the evening for all of the events that took place during the day.

The barbecue dinner menu included the succulent barbecued beef, roasted potatoes, baked beans, tossed salad, rolls and butter, and strawberries and ice cream for dessert. “We had a great crowd out for dinner, with about 153 people on hand,” added Ms. Morrison.
