Sudbury Fitness Mountain Bike Challenge
On July 24 the annual Sudbury Fitness Challenge, the mountain bike version, took place and Manitoulin’s human-powered, two wheeled machine took up the challenge. Alex Anstice, competing in the 20km, “Advanced” division was a smidgen out of first place to take the silver in the three-lap endeavour. Despite posting the fastest, single lap, Alex missed the top of the podium by just 21 seconds. Amazingly, on his mountain bike nonetheless, the cycling demon averaged 27 km/hour over the whole tour and finished in 44:34!
McLean’s Park Mountain Bike Tour set
Alex is also planning the 6-hour Tour at the McLean’s Park trails, coming up on August 27. The 6th annual McLean’s 6 Hour Relay race is a go! Enter as a solo rider or as a relay team of 2-4 riders to see how many laps of the challenging 6km loop you can complete in 6 hours.
Your $20 entry fee will guarantee you a good time and a chance to win some draw prizes!
If you don’t have a team, Alex and volunteers encourage you to show up anyway, and they will do their best to put you on a team!
McLean’s Park is just off Highway 6 on New England Road. If you made it to Gordon’s Eco park, you’ve gone too far.
Missing Massey halfer!
My apologies to Little Current’s Marilee Wright who was also in last weekend’s Friendly Massey Marathon race weekend’s half-marathon. Marilee was fourth in her division in only 1:45, congratulations.
Haweater activities this weekend
This Friday, July 29 the annual Ball Haw-Key tournament is to start at 3 pm. The 4 on 4 event has all kinds of divisions, prizes and food. Call Amanda at 705-368-1620 for more information.

Lacrosse stars
The well-known younger sons of Wikwemikong’s Gerard and Maxine Peltier have once again switched from winter hockey to summer lacrosse. Bo Peltier, who plays hockey for the Powassan Hawks in the NOJHL Jr. A loop, moved to the Brantford/Six Nations for the summer and plays defense for the Six Nations Jr. B Rebels. Meanwhile, his younger brother Evan (a goalie for the West Nipissing, Midget Sting) is playing with the Sudbury based Rockhounds. His team had a great weekend winning the All-Ontario Intermediate C championship at Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Rockhounds have been able to compete with all the top Intermediate C teams in Ontario all summer and capped it off with this weekend’s victory.
Aboriginal Games coordinator named
Wikwemikong’s Marcia Trudeau was named this past week as the CEO of the North American Aboriginal games for 2017. Marcia has been working in the Aboriginal Sports world for a number of years as an advocate and coordinator. The Games are described as “the most prestigious aboriginal, multi-sports competition in the world. Congratulations Marcia, you will do a wonderful job!
All-Ontario Native Games medalists
Deanna Debassige reports that 12 athletes from Wikwemikong competed at the All-Ontario Native games held at the sports complex in Six Nations. Deanna, who is a teacher at Wikwemikong, was happy to acknowledge that all 12 returned with a medal of some kind. Some of the results include Ferris Eshkawkogan with a Silver in the shot-put; Victoria Trudeau (an eleven year-old running in the 15 and under category) finished fourth in the 200 metres and then turned it up a notch in the 400 metres where she picked up a Silver being nudged out at the finish line by an older girl; Autumn Peltier earned a gold and a silver in her races and carried her mother’s (Stephanie) tradition!
Athlete of the year for Northern named
Kiara Dokis-Recollet, daughter of hockey mom Veronica, was recently awarded the Female Athlete of the year by her school, Northern Secondary in Sudbury. Kiara is also an excellent competitive hockey player.
