M’CHIGEENG—Kimel Corbiere will stand trial for the first degree murder of M’Chigeeng elder Johnny Panamick in November, The Expositor has learned.
On Sunday, May 14, 2014, Johnny Panamick was found in his M’Chigeeng home by a neighbour, severely injured. The neighbour called 911 and Mr. Panamick was brought to the Manitoulin Health Centre then airlifted to Health Sciences North in Sudbury. Nearly one month later, on June 13, Mr. Panamick died from his injuries.
On July 17, 2014, Kimel Corbiere of Mindemoya was charged with the murder of Mr. Panamick and has been serving time in a correctional facility ever since.
Jury selection for the trail will take place on November 28 with the trial to start on November 29. Three weeks have been slated for the trail, expected to end on December 16.
Clinton Haggart, who has been charged with seven counts of arson in Little Current, with all of the fires taking place between June and August 2014, will also likely see a trial date set next month.
