Massey Race Weekend

The annual Friendly Massey Marathon race weekend just took place with a pair of Manitoulin runners performing extremely well. In the 21km, half-marathon Kait Toohey (nee Tallman) was third overall and the first woman with an amazing 1:21 time which put her under four minutes for all of the those 21ks!

Just as impressive was 15-year-old James Scott, running in just his first half-marathon race. Keeping Kaitlyn in his sights all the way and managed to be less than four minutes behind her to finish first in his division and fourth overall.

Women’s Slo-Pitch

Congratulations to the Manitoulin players who play in the Espanola Ladies Slo-Pitch League. The formidable crew are currently on a 10-game winning streak. The team plays every Monday and Wednesday evenings, with most of their home games being played out of the WRFN Field (Whitefish River First Nation). The season ends with a Weekend Round Up where they have two divisions A and B. Last year the team lost in the final A Championship and with the way it is looking they will surely be looking for a redo of the A division final again this year. The weekend of the Espanola Ladies Slo-Pitch Round Up is slated for August 19 and 20.

Congratulations and good luck to the 2016 Manitoulin Ladies: Kendra Madahbee, KC Madahbee, Billie Abotossaway, Santana Francis, Kennedy Lanktree, Michelle Lanktree, Tamey McAllister, Jamey Van Horne, Lyndsay Setterington, Daphne Corbiere, Deana Debassige, Jarrielle Thomas, Stacey Dell, Robin Lentir and Anna Migwans.

Mackenzie’s Run

In its third year, Mackenzie’s Run has once again commemorated the life of Mackenzie Peltier and raised some much needed money for CHEO (the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario). Mackenzie’s parents were so thankful for all the care that Mackenzie received during his short life that they wanted to give back to the institution. The following are the results from the 1km and 5km runs held in Little Current this past weekend.

In the 5km: 1st Kristin Farquhar 24:41, 2nd Xavier Mara (9yrs old!) 25:35, 3rd Paula Recollet 26:26, 4th Jordan Cheechoo 11, 26:43, 5th Jack Carter 26:50 (8 years old). In the 1km: 1st Kohyn Eshkawkogan, 2nd Kara Peltier, 3rd Ryan Carter.

Thanks to all that participated and contributed as the run, raised $2,874 for CHEO to bring their 3-year total to over $10,000!

Missing fastball kudos

In my recent discussion of men’s fastball results I can’t believe I forgot Mike Abotossaway. Mike, a veteran Manitoulin sportsman of many sports, has been busy playing fastball again this season for a couple of teams. He has been a part of the Sons of Pitches rep team. In their recent, ultra-competitive tournament in Azilda, Mike hit a homerun in the championship game although the Pitches settled for the silver medal.

Mike also plays with the Mindemoya Brewers in the Manitoulin Island Fastball League and was the pitcher during the winning championship game of the recent Homecoming Weekend Tournament. With so much success this year I’m Mike will be Duke’s number-one son-in-law!

A good sport is good for sports.
