KAGAWONG—Lorie Graham has had a love of unique auction and yard sale finds since the age of 18. Her first purchase was a buffet, which she still has.
When Ms. Graham was encouraged to turn her talent for restoring discarded furniture and other items into something fresh and re-purposed, the idea to open her own store remained in the back of her mind.
Waiting for the right place and the right time, Ms. Graham has turned her dream into reality. The welcoming porch at 156 Main Street in downtown Kagawong, featuring soft blues and vintage pieces, is just a taste of what is to come when one opens the door.
Each piece has been lovingly restored by Ms. Graham and holds a story of its former owner and purpose. A sewing machine tucked in the corner, window frames and step ladder rescued from the landfill, along with a white iron day bed have all been given a second chance, shared Ms. Graham.
Ms. Graham comes by her flair for design quite honestly. When growing up her mom was always changing things up and her sister made all the lovely pillows that are placed on the day bed and scattered throughout the store.
Husband Scott created all the signs inside the store and local artist Kendra Edwards designed the Mudge Bay Mercantile logo (including business and postcards).
“I love pretty things,” said Ms. Graham. The store contains many pretty things that are one of a kind. “You will find re-loved furniture, cottage decor, refurbished lighting, decorative pillows and barn board signs to decorate your home or cottage.”
Ms. Graham found a pair of shutters and asked Doug Clark of Dig and Doug to build a cabinet. They are now being used as doors on the storage unit. The result is perfect.
Since opening on May 27, Ms. Graham has been “super busy.” While some of the businesses in the village began the season during the Victoria Day weekend, she wanted to wait until the following Friday.
The response to Ms. Graham’s newest venture has been amazing. “People are so receptive and positive,” she said. Ms. Graham has found networking with people has been fabulous.
Store hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Ms. Graham plans to be open into December. Visit her on Facebook and on Instagram.
