GORE BAY—Charles C. McLean captured both the overall Island elementary school track and field championship and the per capita trophy.
On Tuesday the track running events were held, while the field events took place at C.C. McLean last week.
In the overall team rankings (most points), the C.C. McLean team took the championship with a total of 177.50 points, just 15.50 points ahead of Little Current Public School (LCPS), which had a total of 162 points. Finishing third was Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) with 95.50 points, followed by Wasse Abin Pontiac School, fourth with 88 points, Lakeview Public School (M’Chigeeng) with 70 points in fifth and Assiginack Public School sixth with a total of 67 points.
C.C. McLean won the per capita trophy as well, which is based on the total points a school had per number of students at the school eligible to participate in the event. C.C.McLean led the way with 1.33 points per student. CMPS was second with 0.67 points per student while LCPS was third with 0.60 points per student.
As for individual results, in the female age nine and under division, Ava Assinewai of CMPS was first with 12 points, with Brooke Gibeault of Assiginack second with nine and Saraya Eshkawkogan of LCPS third with seven.
The boys’ nine and under division saw Malachi Joseph of C.C. McLean in first with 10 points. There was a two-way tie for second with Brodie Pennie of Assiginack and Jayden Hayden of C.C. McLean tied with seven points. There was also a tie for third place with Davin Deschenes and John Michael Taggart, both of LCPS, third with six points.
The girls’ 10-year-old division saw Aysia Debassige of LCPS in first with 12 points, Delaney Bridgeman of CMPS second with 10.50 points, and Shaolin Roy of Pontiac third with eight.
In the boys’ 10-year-old division Mason Leighton of C.C. McLean took top spot with 10 points. There was a two-way tie for second place with Billy Biederman of LCPS and Lucas Wright of C.C. McLean both finishing with nine points each. Third place went to David Gibbons of Assiginack who had seven.
There was a two-way tie for both first and second place in the girls’ 11-year-old division. Tied for first was Trish Patterson of C.C. McLean and Victoria Trudeau of Pontiac with 10 points each. The tie for second was between Sophie Hietkamp of C.C. McLean and Whittier Gauthier of LCPS who each had eight points. Finishing third was Autumn Peltier of Pontiac who had a total of six points.
Trent Bell of C.C. McLean took first place in the boys’ 11-year-old division. He was followed by Liam Bridgeman of CMPS and Sam Assiniwei of LCPS in a tie for second place with 10 points each. Jared Cortes of LCPS was third with seven.
In the girls’ age 12 division, Malia Leighton of C.C. McLean took first place with 11 points, followed by Sierra Pangowish of Pontiac second with nine points, and Hailey Prior of CMPS third with eight.
There was a two-way tie for first place in the boys’ 12-year-old division. Nyron Panamick of Lakeview and Owen Duncanson of CMPS tied for top spot with 12 points each. Johnny Bushey of Lakeview was second with seven and Austin Hayden of C.C. McLean was third with five points.
In the girls’ age 13 and over division, Marjorie Scott of CMPS was first with 11 points. Second was Randi Lyn Lovelace of Lakeview with eight points, while third place went to Britney Biederman of LCPS with six points.
The boys’ age 13 and over division saw Austin Purvis of C.C.McLean finish in first with 12 points. There was a two-way tie for second place with Ryan Jones of Assiginack and Boston Thibault of LCPS with seven points. There was also a tie for third place with Ian Dokum of Pontiac and Kyle Greenman of C.C. McLean finishing third with six points each.
Several Island elementary records were also set during the championships. They include: nine-year-old girls, 800 metre, Ava Assinewai (CMPS) 3:04.28 minutes and 1,500 metres 6:08.50 minutes; nine-year-old boys’ standing long jump, Jayden Hayden (CCMC) and Colin Lindner (LCPS) 1.99 metres; 1,500 metre, Davin Deschenes (CMPS) 5:47.98 minutes; 10-year-old girls’ standing long jump, Kaylee Assinewai (LCPS) 1.89 m; 11-year-old girls standing long jump, Whittier Gauthier (LCPS) 2.10m; high jump, Sophie Hietkamp (CCMC) 1.36 m; 12-year-old girls’ high jump, Malia Leighton (CCMC) 1.33m; and 13-year-old girls 4×100 metre relay, LCPS, 1:02.05 minutes.
