Congratulations to Gregory Trudeau Paquet, who signed with the French River Rapids Jr A of the NOJHL. The Rapids play out of Noelville and are coached by former NHL’er, Moe Mantha.
Manitoulin Islander signs with English Premier League!
Corey McEwen, a former Blind River Beaver and Manitoulin Islander Jr. A, has signed to play with the Telford Tigers of the English Premier (Ice Hockey) League. McEwen (23), son of long-time pro Doug McEwen played for Swinton in the U.K., last season.
Mindemoya Classic nearing!
It is just under five weeks until the 15th annual Mindemoya Classic that is slated to go Sunday, July 3rd this year. The run, paddle and pedal triathlon is a lot of fun with something for the ultra-competitive to the anti-competitive and all for a “can’t be beat” price and a t-shirt.
The race that started out as a co-ed team-of-four event only, has grown to include an open pairs division as well as a solo, race category. As part of a team you can choose to enter the relay version where a team of four will have one runner (5.5km), two paddling a canoe (approximately 4km) and finally, your fourth person will bike (13km). A relay-pairs team will have one who runs, both paddling and one who bikes. The other way to complete the challenge is to try your hand and feet at the endurance race where all members of your team (4’s, pairs or solo) complete each of the 3 legs with a team of four using 2 canoes.
With all of that being said, organizers encourage people to get out and have fun and break any and all rules to compete as an unranked team. All participants still ‘compete’ for draw prizes. In fact a team already registered features a team where one of the trio is a dog but not likely to help out in a canoe.

Note: The Classic can always use some help so, if you can be an unpaid intern, visit the website then email or give organizers a call. There is a free t-shirt and/or high-school volunteer hours in it for all helpers. All proceeds this year are to be allocated to the Central Manitoulin Public School’s Outdoors Club who are in desperate need of some new backpacks.
Pickleball reminder!
The local Little Current club plays at the Little Current Recreation Centre’s Curling Club. The club’s regular two-hour, time slots are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 12 pm. They are also creating an additional Thursday evening opportunity for those who busy during the day.
The club is a great bunch who are into this fun, social game that gets you moving. Equipment and lessons are provided for beginners. They also boast some of the best provincially, nationally and internationally ranked players from here, on Manitoulin!
So for a measly $15 you get up to 4 days a week to play as well as a Pickle Ball of Ontario membership, which provides the required insurance coverage. Girls Run this weekend
The annual Girls Run in Sudbury takes place this Sunday. The Cross-country run or walk, offers a 2.5, 5 or 10 km distances. The Girls Run is a movement since that hopes to combine women’s health and sport and offers runs all over Canada. The action starts at 8:30am at the Laurentian University track.
