SPRING BAY—The Manitoulin Island community has come together again, this time to raise funds for Dawn Young, a Spring Bay resident who has Type 1 diabetes and now requires a double transplant (pancreas and kidneys) that will cure her of diabetes.
“Manitoulin is full of amazing people,” stated Gayle Payette following a fundraising spaghetti dinner held last week in Spring Bay to raise funds for Ms. Young and her family for her transplant surgery to take place in London.
“We served 210 people for dinner and made over $3,500 tonight with donations,” said Ms. Payette. “We want to give a shout out to all who volunteered tonight and all the businesses and people that donated to make the meal a huge success. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Matt Young told the Recorder this past Sunday evening that the Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club has also donated $750 to Ms. Young’s cause.
With the fundraising dinner and donations, the Lions donation, and funds raised on GoFundMe along with money made in a 50/50 raffle held earlier, approximately $7,500 has been raised so far.
As has been reported previously, Dawn Young, who has Type 1 diabetes and now requires a double transplant (pancreas and kidneys), has received word that the surgery is expected to take place very soon, and it will cure the Spring Bay woman of diabetes (which she has had since she was seven-years-old).
“Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help with the lodging, transportation, medical expenses, and meals for the family while Dawn is in the London hospital,” said Ms. Payette, who is helping to spearhead the fundraising campaign.
