Technology has reached Providence Bay! They’ve begun some landscaping work at the site for the new Bell Tower. It won’t be long now and we’ll be just as “connected” as the rest of the world. We’ll have to wait and see if this is a time for rejoicing or a time to grieve. We shall have to see.
The fundraiser that was held to help raise funds for Dawn Young for her medical expenses that will be incurred as she awaits a double organ transplant was held on May 12, 2016. The event was hosted by Gayle Payette who organized numerous other volunteers to help make the night be the success that it was. The money that was raised is greatly appreciated but it is a mere drop in the bucket for what the family needs. The work that was done to the kitchen in the Providence Bay Community Centennial Hall looks fantastic. The kitchen looks smooth, sleek and updated. Kudos go out to all of the volunteers that helped out on this much needed renovation.
Work has begun to put the government docks in at the marina. There will be a new harbour master this year.
Welcome back to many community members. A few that we’ve noticed are Betty and Eddy Simpson, Marlene and Bill Jewell, Pat and Don Burke. Don is feeling much better and is back to playing golf. If there is anyone that we failed to mention, please let us know so that we can add it to our column. It’s so exciting to see the village coming back to life after winter.
The annual beach cleanup that was hosted by the Providence Bay Community Centre Board was really well attended. There were many people out lending a hand to rake and gather up garbage. Tractors were provided by Lyle Dewar and Darren Dewar to help remove all the debris once it was raked up. A barbecue was held for everyone who helped. What a great showing of community support.
Although many people have been submitting letters and comments to the paper for full cleanup of the beach, the recent beach cleanup was an annual event and not the anticipated removal of all of the grasses and brush that have grown up on our beach. There has been a lot of talk around town and just about anyone that you talk to has their own opinion. It’s hard to know what’s fact or fiction or mere speculation. Apparently, a submission has been made by the township to the appropriate ministries and we are anticipating a response sometime in June of this year. We have to remember that this is a long process when dealing with government ministries and we have to ensure that all the applications and paperwork are completed correctly. If you have any concerns about the Providence Bay Beach please contact the municipality and/or your local council member.
The work on the village square is resuming. A big thanks goes out to the township for delivering the soil to begin shaping the landscaping. A work bee is in the planning stages and we hope to see all our generous and hardworking volunteers out again this year.
Shirley Cranston was happy to have daughter Cathy Chant and granddaughter Amanda visiting recently and catching up with the Island Cranston Clan.
Mona Bryan recently celebrated a birthday and we are surprised that her sister didn’t pay her back after disclosing her age a couple of weeks back. Happy belated birthday to Mona. She also wants to wish her husband Glen a happy 33rd anniversary on May 21. Their very happy to be able to celebrating at their favorite place: their Providence Bay cottage. She says she loves him more than there are grains of sand on the Providence Bay Beach. A Happy Anniversary to both of you.
The long weekend is coming up next weekend and we’ll have many seasonal residents and visitors back. Make sure to be safe on our roads as there will be lots of extra traffic.
The Providence Bay Dump will now be operating under their extended summer hours. They will be open both Saturday and Sunday from 2 until 6 pm.
