The grass is turning green, trees are budding, and the talented students and staff of MSS welcomed the warm weather with a Spring Talent Show. On Tuesday, April 25 the Art Committee of MSS hosted the 2016 Talent Show. Students could buy out of their fourth period classes and watch the performances in the cafeteria. The opening act was the Grade 10 Band with the song ‘Rock Around the Clock.’ The Teacher Band, consisting of Mr. Kategiannis on drums, Mr. Nelson on electric guitar, Mr. Theijsmeijer on bass guitar, and Mr. Scott on vocals and acoustic guitar performed “Runnin’ Down a Dream” by Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers. The crowd laughed along to Alexa Gordon, Courtney Oswald, Becky MacDonald, Bryce Mastelko, Brad Sayyae and Josh Noble’s version of the ‘Mysterious Ticking Noise.’ Kylie Cranston and Michelle Campbell performed a dance duet to ‘Wonderland,’ earning an ovation from the audience. MCs Rebecca Dawson and Jordan Moore made the audience laugh by wearing the same clothes, even when they were wearing dresses.
On the same evening as the Talent Show, the Evening Spring Concert was held in the cafeteria of MSS. Students from MSS, Lakeview, CMPS, and C.C. MacLean performed numerous musical numbers. The senior band from MSS had the audience stunned by their performance of ‘Rule the World.’ I heard the audience saying “awe” at the CMPS performance of ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ using boomwhackers, Lakeview’s performance included vocals from the elementary students accompanied by the MSS senior band. The two groups collaborated to create a new arrangement of ‘The Circle of Life’ from The Lion King. The proceeds from the bake sale went directly towards funding for the Senior Band trip coming up the weekend of May 6-8.
SHARE/Go Green went on an adventure with Manitoulin Streams on Friday, April 29. The group travelled to Kagawong to learn about the stages of stream rehabilitation. Sue Meert, a Manitoulin Streams employee, brought the group of 16 students plus Ms. Wilson on a hike beside the Bridal Veil stream. The group stopped to take pictures, and look at the invertebrate that show the healthy growth of the stream. Max Chapman, Sean Patterson, Rebecca Dawson, Kylie Cranston, Mackenzie Gilmore, Caroline Glasby, Nathan Howard, Victoria MacDonald, Mason Golder, Sophie Bondi, April Torkopolous, Beth Wiwchar, Isaac Gosse, Maylen Moffat, Ben Sayyae, and I finished off the trip with a splash through the rapids right under the falls, resulting in the ride back being full of laughter and chattering teeth.
The MSS Aerobics team won gold at the OFSAA championships in Windsor. After a 10-hour drive, the girls relaxed at their hotel and just hung out. On Tuesday, April 25, the team woke up at 8 am to prepare for their competition at 9:45 am. When they arrived at the competition, they warmed up and stretched before going up against six other schools. The group performed an upbeat routine to Uma Thurman by Fall Out Boy. During the ceremony, the girls were all nervous, and when their names were called—Yohana Ogbamichael, Roxanna Rojas-Brizuela, Donnshai Bruleigh, Eden Beaudin, Jill Cooper and Alyssa Green—jumped up in shock and excitement before running up to receive their gold medals. The girls endured the long ride home only to be welcomed back to MSS with congratulations from everyone.
As the dreary winter weather disappears, the MSS involvement in the community increases. Spring also brings Prom, which will take place on May 27 at MSS from 7:30 to 10:30 pm. Career day is also coming up on May 25. Students have filled out option sheets for the day, and are waiting to see what workshops they will be taking part in. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
