Fundraising event planned for Spring Bay woman

SPRING BAY—Friends and family are hosting a fundraising dinner for a young Spring Bay woman who has juvenile diabetes and now requires a double transplant. Funds are being raised for Dawn Young and her family for medical and travel expenses.

Gayle Payette of M’Chigeeng told the Recorder last week, “Dawn and her family are in London, Ontario for a pre-surgery consultation. Dawn has Type 1 diabetes and now needs to have a pancreas and kidney transplant. They will be back in few days, and when she gets back and they receive notification from the hospital of when Dawn is to have her surgery, they will have to leave immediately and will be flying from the Manitoulin East airport to London.”

“She will have to stay a minimum of three months in London hospital after she has her surgery and recovers,” said Ms. Payette. “Not all her medical and travel costs are covered, so we are trying to raise funds for Dawn and her family.”

Ms. Payette pointed out a 50/50 raffle draw was already held to raise funds, and the person who won the $1,300 prize donated half of the funds back to Ms. Young and her family.

“We also have a site online on gofundme.com for Dawn Young,” said Ms. Payette. “Dawn is now living with her parents John and Pat, and her mom will be going and staying in London with her.”

“Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help with the lodging, transportation, medical expenses and meals for the family,” said Ms. Payette.

The benefit spaghetti dinner being held for Dawn Young will take place on Thursday, May 12 from 5 to 7 pm at the Providence Bay Hall. Dinner is $10 per plate for adults, and $5 for children 5 to 10-years-old. The dinner includes spaghetti, garlic bread, drink and dessert.

Tickets are available at Loco Beanz in Gore Bay or from Joanna Noble, Tina Tolsma or Matt Young. For more information contact Gayle Payette at galepayette@gmail.com or Patricia Young at 705-377-5695.
