Classic School of Dance presents the legend of Mulan this Sunday

M’CHIGEENG—The Classic School of Dance will be presenting its production of Mulan this Sunday, May 1 at 2:30 pm at Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) in M’Chigeeng.

“Mulan is a really empowering story with a powerful message that girls can be anything they want to be,” explained Classic School of Dance Artistic Director Maja Mielonen on selecting Mulan as this year’s production. “It is a true legend and takes place in a land unknown to us. It has a challenging musical score and encouraged us to incorporate new movement.”

Ms. Mielonen said that the production is very colourful and “lends itself visually.”

She began work on the choreography in December and began teaching it to the students in January.

“Madonna Aeschlimann did a beautiful mural on the back wall of the MSS stage,” added Ms. Mielonen. “We are just getting the rest of the sets together and are excited for this weekend.”

Ms. Mielonen said the production and music will focus more on the legend of Mulan, but it will include some of the songs from the Disney musical.

Mulan stars senior dancer Kylie Cranston as Mulan and Michelle Campbell, Delaney Madore and Yohana Ogbamichael as her three best friends. Other leads include Donnshai Bruleigh as Mulan’s mom, Cassandra Kuntsi as Mulan’s dad and Kieran Harper Hogge as the matchmaker.

The production of Mulan is this Sunday, May 1 at 2:30 pm at MSS in M’Chigeeng. Tickets are $10 and available at the door and free for children 10 and under. All proceeds will go to the Classic School of Dance student fund.
