ST. CATHARINES—Deidre Debassige of M’Chigeeng, a first year psychology student with the Intermediate A Brock Jr. Badgers, has topped off her season finale as champion of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League.
This past weekend, the Brock Intermediate A Badgers played in the final four championship in a round robin series with Guelph Gryphons, Etibicoke Dolphins and Whitby Wolves. Game 1 against Guelph ended in a 1-1 tie and an admission that these two teams were going to meet each other again. In game two, the Badgers easily handled Whitby with a 4-1 victory, followed by nail-biter game against Etibicoke, where Ms. Debassige scored the winning goal with a sniper shot from the blue line to advance to the championship game.
The final match was a rough and tough end-to-end battle, but the Badgers scored to take a 1-0 lead near the end of the second period. However, the game was far from being over, as the Badgers continued to battle until they sealed the deal with a goal midway in the 3rd, followed by an empty-netter to seal the win 3-0.
The Brock Badgers, who finished first place in the league and won the provincial championship two weekends ago, now have the bragging rights as Intermediate A Lower Lakes Female Hockey Champions. This team has a lot to be proud of, as they add this to their list of successes this year which include four tournament championship wins.
Now that Ms. Debassige has finished her league play on a high note, she plans to hit the books, studying for her exams which start on April 11. After her exams, Ms. Debassige will be taking certification to become a personal trainer before heading to the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, which will be held in Mississauga in early May.
