MSS Kids in the Hall

March break has started but students had a fun-filled last few days of school. The Mustang girls’ hockey team has finished their 2016 season. The girls played their hardest in their last game against Bishop-Carter in Sudbury last Tuesday. The whole team poured their hearts into the game as they skated their fastest, played their best defense, and got as many goals as they could. The final score was 3-2 for Bishop-Carter, but the girls were all sportsmanlike and shook hands with their opponents. The team had a successful season and placed second in the championship, representing our school well.

On Wednesday night, there was a teachers versus girls hockey team challenge at the M’Chigeeng arena after school. The teachers’ team, consisting of Mr. Zegil, Mr. Balfe, Mrs. Balfe, Mr. Wesno, Mr. Tallman, Ms. Rose, Mr. Doane, Mr. Davy, Mr. Smith, Mr. Kategiannis and Mr. Harfield, played an aggressive game against the second place league championship girls’ team. The teachers played relentlessly against the Mustang girls beating them 5-1. The girls were having fun and laughing out on the ice, while the teachers’ played as if they were in the NHL, maybe taking the game a tad too seriously.

On Thursday at lunch there was a teachers’ versus students Reach for the Top challenge. The participating teachers were Ms. Ferguson, Mr. Doane, Ms. Wilson and Ms. Holson. The students from the Reach for the Top team who played were Sean Patterson, Hanna Hutchinson, David Hall and J.D. Herlehy. The teachers won, but not without a fight from the students.

The SHARE/Go Green committee is doing a spring fundraiser for Kenya. The group members are selling flower bulbs, strawberry plants and gardening tools from Vesey’s. This is a great way to get ready for spring and make a difference in the world at the same time.

On Friday, the last day of school before March break, Students’ Council organized the Winter Carnival. There were lots of fun activities throughout the day. In the morning there was Swedish Dinkey, a hammering competition, badminton in the gym, road hockey, karaoke, trivia, Netflix, and the Pride Room. The Rainbow Rights group was doing face painting, colouring hair, and decorating cupcakes in the Pride Room all day. Students could snack on a cupcake while getting their faces painted or hair coloured. During lunch students’ council gave out free hotdogs and hot chocolate. Students hung out by the campfire while eating their tasty lunch. In the afternoon, Students’ Council showed Big Hero 6 on the big screen in the cafeteria. Popcorn was handed out and students chatted and watched the movie. All day there was ice hockey at the M’Chigeeng arena. Students could pay $2 and spend the day watching their friends play fun games of hockey. Sophie Bondi, a Grade 9 student and player on the MSS girls’ hockey team, said, “The tournament was a lot of fun. My team won first place and we won all of our games.” Her team consisted of Sophie Bondi, Maddy Niven, Robin Lentir, Ms. Addison, Mr. Davy, Mr. Smith, Carter Noble, David Scott, and James Scott. Everybody who played in the tournament came back to the school content with the day.

With students away on trips or just relaxing at home, the halls of MSS are quiet for a much deserved week off. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
