CENTRAL MANITOULIN—Finding themselves less than enamoured with the results returned by professional graphic artists specializing in logo production, Central Manitoulin council has decided to crowd-source a solution to a new municipal logo by holding a logo contest.

“We had gone with a so-called professional logoist,” said Central Manitoulin Mayor Richard Stephens. “What we got really didn’t set anything on fire.”

With the lack of enthusiasm for the new logo offerings found amongst the members of council, Mayor Stephens said that the council felt it was “the perfect time to open it up to ideas with the people in the area. That was certainly my position.”

Mayor Stephens pointed out that the Island has a strong artistic community with a lot of creative people who might like to set their talents to creating better solutions than had so far been presented.

Although the decision has been made to open the logo design to the community, the idea still needs some flesh on the bones. “We discussed the idea of prizes, but we haven’t really got to that that stage yet,” he said.

There is also no set date or deadline. “There is no due date, we have left it pretty much open-ended right now,” he said.

Mayor Stephens said he was certain that those details will be forthcoming in the near future. “I am looking forward to see what the community can come up with,” he said.

Further information on where to submit ideas for the new Central Manitoulin logo can be obtained by calling the municipal office at 705-377-5726.
