Shirley Cranston and her granddaughter Victoria Cranston went to the “Once Upon a Mattress” production that was held at Manitoulin Secondary School on Saturday, February 13. Despite the bitterly cold temperatures there was a large crowd at the wonderful show about the fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.”
The Providence Bay/Mindemoya/Kagawong United Church Women (UCW) held a well attended meeting at Providence Bay United Church on February 16. The guest speaker was Sandy Cook who spoke about the Angel Bus and the hard working volunteers at Manitoulin Lodge in Gore Bay. The regular church service time is 11:30 am at the Providence Bay United Church every Sunday–everyone welcome. Thank you to Michael White for keeping the entryway to the church cleared and safe every week all winter and to Robbie Pearson for his work on the parking lot.
The North Shore Secondary School Athletics (NSSSA) girls’ curling event was held at the Providence Bay Curling Club on February 17 and 18. The winning rink was from Ecole Secondaire Jeunesse-Nord from Blind River. Our Manitoulin team was a close runner up. There was fantastic support shown by the community. The boys’ event was held in Mindemoya on the same dates.
The ladies’ bonspiel was a huge success once again. The games brought such a crowd that there was standing room only at times watching all the excitement. It sure is great having the TVs that are positioned over the far end house of the rink for the spectators to watch so everyone can see the action taking place on the north side of the ice. The theme this year was “The Red Necks on the Bay.” The teams put skits on Saturday night for ladies only and they certainly dressed the part. The laughs and applause were so loud I’m sure the whole town must have heard. It was well organized with lunches and dinners were available for everyone. The winning rink for the 1st event was the Sherry Forest rink, the 2nd event was Ellen Holroyd rink and the 3rd was won by the Nancy Leeson rink.
This winter has sure been interesting with its mixture of mild weather and occasional freezing cold snaps. It was really cold out on the Family Day long weekend but plenty of people were still out and about enjoying spending time with families doing winter activities.
We missed telling you about the euchre tournament that was held last night. It’s always held the last Tuesday of the month in the Twilight Seniors Club in the basement of the Providence Bay Centennial Hall. Play begins at 8 pm and cost is $5 per person and all are welcome but you need a partner to join. A light lunch is provided.
An invitation is out to the community of Providence Bay to attend the Tehkummah Winter Fun Day being held February 28, 9 am to 6 pm. They have a fun-filled day planned with lots of indoor and outdoor events. You can buy pancakes for breakfast, lunch is available and chili or stew for dinner. There are plenty of family-centered activities to keep everyone entertained.
Good luck wishes go out to our Manitoulin Special Olympic athletes who are heading out to the Winter Games being held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland March 1 to 3, 2016. Go, Teams, Go!
