Mustang minute
The Mustang Girls’ hockey team won against Espanola last week in their Division 2 semi-finals! The Black and Gold won their first game over EHS 4 – 3 where they sported a 4 – 0 lead going into the third but held on for the win. Points went to Kennedy Lanktree with four, Robin Lentir 3, and Anna Migwans 2. The girls will now, have played off against Bishop Carter in Game 1 on Tuesday at 3 pm at the Centennial Arena for the Division 2 championship. However, Thursday is Game 2 at home in M’Chigeeng (currently scheduled for 5:00). Game 3 (should it be necessary) will be back at Centennial on Tuesday March 1st at 3:00. Good luck, Mustangs!
The Boys’ side ended up losing their final game 7 – 3 against St. Charles in their best of three semi-final series last week. The Mustang Goals were scored by Carter Noble, Ben Haner and Justice Corbiere. On the opposing side however three Island lads were ecstatic to be moving on as St. Charles boasts the likes of Ryan Moggy, Gregory Trudeau-Paquet and Tanner Webkamigad. The St. Charles side will now vie for the SDSSA title against Lockerby this week.
NSSSA Curling Playdowns send Mustangs to NOSSA
The MSS girls’ curling team competing at the North Shore Championships this past week in Providence Bay will be on their way to the Northern Ontario championships this week. The team finished the round robin tied for first place with a 5-1 record. In the end they finished second place overall (out of 4 teams) after losing a close final tie-breaker game against the team from Blind River. The MSS girls (featuring: Rebecca Dawson, Morgan Hall, Emily Tardif, Jary White and Coach Dawn Dawson) will now represent the North Shore as the “B” rep at the NOSSA Playdowns in Sault Ste. Marie starting Tuesday (yesterday) morning.
The boys’ competition was very tight with 3 well-matched teams competing. MSS boys finished in third after 4 close games, ending the tournament with a 1-3 record. Congratulations to: Bryce Mastelko, Jordan Moore, Sean Patterson, Alex Ingram, Isaac Gosse and Coach Angela Johnston.
Panther Points
The two younger Panther teams showed well in the Soo Extravaganza Tourney this past weekend with both teams making it to the semi-finals. The Novice Panthers playing in the Novice Major A division and defeated Community First 2-1, dropping a 5 – 2 decision to the Soo Lions, then beating Avery Construction 4-1 before falling 3 – 0 to the Soo Lions is the Semis. (BTW: The Lions went on to win the finals.)
Meanwhile in the Atom Minor A section the Panthers Atoms ran off three straight victories (3-1 Sim’s Countertops, 7-2 Copper Cliff A and 5-2 Soo Mr. Electric) before dropping a 4-1 game against the Walden Devils in the semi-finals. The atoms spread out their offense with nearly every single player carding a point on the weekend but everyone had an important role in their success, overall. Once again the Panthers lost to the eventual Extravaganza winners! Congratulations to solid team efforts from both teams!
Local netminder earns hardware
Wikwemikong’s Dana Lewis backstopped the Attawapiskat North Stars to a Bantam ‘A’ Championship this past weekend. Playing in the 9th Annual Mushkegowuk Cup in Timmins, Dana was not only voted Best Goaltender but also Tournament MVP! Way to go, Dana.
Longtime, Island curler places well
Former Little Current Curling Club member Glen Case (once a regular with his wife Cathy on the Island bonspiel circuit) attended the Northern Ontario Senior Men’s Curling Championships as a fifth for the Dave Barker rink out of the Geraldton Curling Club team last week in Iroquois Falls. Although just an honour to play for the chance to compete for the Canadian title, Glen’s rink won a couple of games and were close in others. Glen is the proud grandfather of up-and-coming Panther sniper Greyson Brewer-Case and Little Current Flyer Emerson Brewer-Case and father of Panther alums Chris, Sean and Aaron Case.
Funspiel teams still needed!
Manitoulin Family Resources is hosting a Funspiel next Saturday, (March 5th) at the Mindemoya Curling Rink. It is a worthy event with all proceeds to go directly to the Food Bank. Registration is just $160 for your team of four and includes a spaghetti dinner. Snacks and lunch will also be available. There will also be a Silent Calcutta Auction, 50/50 Draw and prizes.
