Wikwemikong Ice Fishing Derby to proceed as scheduled this Saturday

WIKWEMIKONG–Wikwemikong Tourism is pleased to announce the 8th Annual Ice Fishing Derby will go ahead as planned Saturday, February 13 from 8 am to 12 noon at Bayside Resort.

The Wikwemikong Derby, unlike other pre-drilled tournaments in the north, spreads its event over an area of three kilometers. The safety of our guests is paramount. This year, derby officials have been closely monitoring ice conditions. Current ice condition checks show 12 inches of ice with the base (black ice) between 6.5-8 inches. The deep freeze weather over the next couple of days will continue to improve the ice conditions. However, extra precautionary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of our guests. The extra safety precautions include: increasing the space between holes from 20-25ft; no ATVs or snowmobiles permitted in the derby area; and allowing only paid participants on the ice. Daytime temperatures are expected to be around minus 21, so portable ice huts will be permitted.

Designated parking will be available on the shore at Buzwah Park and along the road by Bayside Resort.

Tickets can purchased at: Ramakkos (Sudbury); Moxies Bait & Tackle (Lively); Trailside Sports (Espanola); Nick’s Cat House & Marine (Espanola); Manitoulin Expositor (Little Current); Breakaway Sports (Little Current); D.A. Williamson’s (Mindemoya) and Wikwemikong Tourism (Wikwemikong). On derby day, tickets will be on sale beginning at 7 am.

The derby social and prize table will be held at the Wasse-Abin High-School with a rainbow trout lunch provided by Buzwah Fisheries.

Proceeds from the derby help Wikwemikong Tourism build a foundation for sustainable tourism development through the creation of quality market ready products and services. Wikwemikong Tourism is under the direction of the Wikwemikong Development Commission, the economic development branch of the WikwemikongUnceded Indian Reserve.
