LITTLE CURRENT––The Northeast Town has received funding to assist area seniors with living active, healthy lives.
“With support received from the government of Ontario through the Seniors Community Grant, the Northeast Town and the Manitoulin Community Fitness Centre will be offering up to 50 one-month gym memberships and orientation sessions free to local seniors aged 55 and over through the Happily Ever Active program,” states a press release from the Northeast Town.
“The Happily Ever Active program will provide a great opportunity to introduce seniors in the Northeast Town to the benefits associated with physical activity at a gym, and will also provide them with an orientation session from a certified personal trainer,” said Northeast Town Mayor Al MacNevin.
“Not only will this increase physical fitness, it will provide significant psychological benefits as well,” the press release notes. “Regular, moderate physical activity can help manage stress and improve mood, and being active on a regular basis may help reduce feelings of depression. Studies also suggest that exercise can improve or maintain some aspects of cognitive function, such as your ability to shift quickly between tasks, plan an activity, and ignore irrelevant information.”
If you or someone you know is interested in taking advantage of this program, please contact Kristin Luoma at 705-368-3500 ext.230 or kluoma@townofnemi.on.ca. Sign up quickly because memberships are limited, and orientation sessions begin in February.
