LITTLE CURRENT—The Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) Fire Department responded to a fire just outside of Little Current last week that saw a barn razed.
Steve Hart, community services officer (CSO) with the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, confirmed that a barn had burned down in the blaze, which took place on Friday, January 22. There were no injuries to those who own the property or the animals (alpacas) which are housed in the barn. The fire is not being viewed by the police as suspicious.
Dave Williamson, CAO of the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands, confirmed, “the fire department responded to the fire which took place in the early morning (January 22). When the firefighters arrived on the scene the barn was fully engulfed in flames. They (fire department) contained the fire to the structure,” he said, noting “there was also a backhoe that was engaged in the blaze.”
The fire took place at the alpaca farm (Island Alpacas) right off Highway 6 on Morphet Sideroad, just outside Little Current.
“There were no injuries. There were some animals in the barn (alpacas), but the door was open so they got out before being caught in the fire,” said Mr. Williamson.
