GORE  BAY—The Sherry Forest Rink won the first event at the Gore Bay Curling Club annual Ladies Bonspiel held this past weekend.

The Sherry Forest Rink defeated the Elva Carter Rink in the final to hoist the Doris ‘Toots’ Strain Memorial Trophy (emblematic of the first event winner at this bonspiel). The Forest Rink also included vice Heather Hall, second Nancy Head and lead Holly Williamson.

“Once again, this was a great bonspiel,” said Ms. Forest. She acknowledged the effort of the many people who helped organize and host the event.

Along with Ms. Carter, other members of her rink included Jane Campbell, Cindy Wright and Cindy Van Buskirk.

There were 20 rinks entered in the bonspiel, with the winners of the second event being skip Sandy Lawrence, Gaynor Orford, Theresa Carlisle and Heather Strain. The runner-up in the second event was the Marilyn Proulx Rink, with team Sue Whynott,  Wendy Niven and Nancy Cranston.

The third event saw the Ellen Holroyd skipped rink taking first place. Her team included Patricia MacDonald, Leslie Morin and Maureen Pearce. The runner-up was the Melanie Carr Rink, along with Maureen Dumond, Yvonne Bailey and Marilyn Prior.

“I would like to thank everyone for coming out this weekend,” said Sandy Merrylees, president of the Gore Bay Curling Club. “Lorraine McDonald provided the decorations and organized the entertainment  on Saturday evening. Dan Marois did a great job behind the bar and Kim Orford provided the great food in the kitchen. As well, thanks to all our sponsors, without whom we wouldn’t have all the great prizes.”
