Local biathlete finishes fifth in Canadian competition

ICE LAKE—Hard work and training is certainly paying off for Ice Lake biathlete Mackenzie Turner.

“I was just in Canmore (Alberta) from December 10-21 training and racing,” Ms. Turner told the Recorder this past weekend. “All the hard work with training this summer paid off as I had a top finish of fifth in a mass start, hitting 18 of 20 targets.”

The races included athletes between the age of 17-18 from all over Canada.

“I am very pleased with all my other races also, placing very well in all of them,” said Ms. Turner. She pointed out, “this was a very good start to an upcoming busy season, one that I am very excited for.”

Ms. Turner will be heading to La Patrie, Quebec for her next race on January 15-17. She will be staying in Ottawa to train for the week, then heading off to Valcartier, Quebec for races on January 22-24.

“Training is going very good, now that there is a bit of snow from me to ski on here at home,” explained Ms. Turner. “I can really work on my ski technique more. A bit more snow would help the trails though.”

“I am very excited as well that MSS (Manitoulin Secondary School) has a Nordic ski team, so I will be competing for us there also,” continued Ms. Turner. “We compete for NSSSA in early February. I may have some pretty tight travelling times in there to make it to Blind River, but I will be there.”
