Two women arrested following a break and enter in M’Chigeeng

In the evening hours of January 3, 2016, UCCM Anishnaabe Police responded to a report of a break and enter in progress at a residence on the M’Chigeeng First Nation. When the UCCM Police arrived they located one of the female accused at the scene while a second accomplice fled prior to police arrival. Police arrested a 24-year-old female of Aundeck Omni Kaning at the scene for break enter with intent, while the second accused, a 23-year-old female of M’Chigeeng, was apprehended shortly after during a vehicle stop on Highway 540 near Bidwell Road.

The 24-year-old of Aundeck Omni Kaning is charged with break, enter and intent to commit an indictable offence and is scheduled to appear in Gore Bay Court on January 25 at 10 am.

The 23-year-old of M’Chigeeng First Nation is charged with breach of probation and break, enter with intent to commit an indictable offence. She remained in custody pending a Gore Bay bail hearing on January 4.

On December 31, 2015, UCCM Police received a report of theft of power tools from a shed on the Whitefish River First Nation. The culprit(s) entered an unlocked shed and removed two power tools prior to fleeing the scene.

This case is remains under investigation and police are asking anyone with information to please contact the UCCM Anishnaabe Police at 1-888-377-7135 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). In addition, police would like to remind residents to lock garages and out building whenever possible.

RIDE check results in impaired driver

At 5 pm on Monday, December 21, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) check on Highway 540B, in Gore Bay when a pickup truck approached the location. An officer spoke with the driver and determined he had consumed alcohol.

As a result of this investigation, a 46-year-old male of Central Manitoulin has been charged with impaired driving and exceeding the legal limit of alcohol in his blood contrary to section 253(1)(a) & 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on January 25, 2016.

The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
