SUDBURY—Many students in Rainbow District School Board schools in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin were to canvass their neighbourhoods for non-perishable food items for their local food banks yesterday, Thursday, December 3.

This is the second annual Rainbow Kids Helping Kids Day, which is part of the RDSB’s annual effort to support the Kids Helping Kids Christmas Food Drive in memory of Edgar Burton.

“Last year, Rainbow schools collected more than 178,000 food items,” said Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “This year, our goal is to collect a total of 200,000 food items to support individuals and families in the communities that we serve.”

“Cash donations are also  welcome,” said Mr. Blaseg. “Each dollar donated provides six dollars of food value to the Sudbury Food Bank.”

Rainbow schools have been awarded the coveted Kids Helping Kids Torch for most food items collected six times over the past seven years.

“The food that we collect will be going to all the food banks in our jurisdiction, benefiting students and families in all of our school communities,” said Mr. Blaseg. “We thank everyone for joining with us to collect one more can.”
