Mustang minute
The Manitoulin Mustang boys’ hockey team took their unbeaten streak into a game against the also perfect St. Benedict Bears last Tuesday. The match featured two of the remaining three unbeaten teams in the 10-team SDSSAA loop this year.
Manitoulin jumped out to a 3-2 lead at the end of two periods, with Matt Craig pulling the trigger twice for the visitors, while Alex Smith and Thomas Hayden rounded out the scoring.
The Mustangs looked to put that first loss onto the Bears’ record but with just 2 minutes left, the Bears took advantage of Manitoulin on the power play with the tying goal. The tie allows both teams to still claim unbeaten status.
The Mustangs also padded their stats last week with a forfeit win over L’Horizon. The black and gold will next skate at home in an important game against the always powerful St. Charles Cardinals this Friday. The Mustangs are currently ranked in first place and look to retain the honour over the second place Cards who feature nifty Wikwemikong player Gregory Trudeau-Pacquette. The game will go at 7 pm in Little Current.
The Mustang girls beat the St. Benedict Bears in their second last home game and totally dominated L’Horizon last week, 8 – 2! Kennedy Lanktree took home three goals and two assists while Maddy Niven, Robin Lentir, Meaghan Wall and Trinity Leeson had two points each. Hanna Woestenenk, Alayna Cranston, Faith Turner and Cass Bisson earned one point. The girls play their next home game at 5 pm in M’Chigeeng on Tuesday, December 15.
Former Islander comes back strong after injury
Coming off a longtime serious leg injury which saw her miss the first 11 games of the season, Manitowaning’s Victoria Pitawanakwat (daughter of Jeff and Teina) scored RIT’s sole goal in a 3-1 loss to Colgate University. Victoria knocked in her own rebound to sink the marker. A sophomore, Pitawanakwat fired a career-high 7 shots on goal as she had a strong game in her return to Division 1 College Hockey.
Laidley starts strong in the Ivy League!
Former Manitoulin Panthers and Sudbury AAA Wolves product Michael Laidley of Little Current is off to a good start in his first year of NCAA Division 1 hockey. Michael, son of Shane and Beryl, is leading freshman scorers on the St Lawrence University Saints with 6 points in 9 games. He has 2 goals and 4 assists. The closest Freshman teammate has 3 points. Laidley has started in 9 games in his first year of collegiate hockey. St. Lawrence has an overall record of 8-3-2 in a great start to the 2015-16 season.
Wikwemikong players earn hardware
Wikwemikong girls of Midget age played with the Sudbury CWS Midget team this past weekend in a Sault Intermediate (17-20 year olds) tournament and skated away with the silver medal. Playing against the older women didn’t seem to phase the youngsters as they went 4 and 1. Sudbury did suffer a 3-0 loss but qualified for the semi-finals where they downed Sault Value Village 2 to 1. In the final again, against Sudbury Lightning they came up short but picked up the silver. Game stars were Grace Manitowabi, Aurora Ominika-Enosse, Dana McCleod and Chloe Manitowabi. Congratulations girls.
