Joe Pilon passed away Sunday, November 15. He grew up in Providence Bay at the corner of Highway 551 before the bridge heading towards the docks. Although he moved to Sudbury, he always vacationed in Providence Bay and was a familiar person at the Government Dock for many years, fishing with his boat the ‘Lucy M.’ Condolences go out to the family.
The annual 2015 Fowl Supper, which is hosted by the Providence Bay Community Centre Board, was a huge success again this year. It was held November 17. It was very well organized. Thank you to the organizers and the local corporate sponsors and even a couple of off-Island construction companies. We are also grateful to the wonderful community of Providence Bay yet again for their kind donations of food and time. A special thanks also goes out to all of the young servers. They did a tremendous job. Does anyone remember how many years this annual event has been held?
Many ladies from the community took advantage of their husbands being out hunting and attended the annual ladies’ night that was held at the local businesses in Mindemoya. Other ladies who hunt may not have had the opportunity to attend but rest assured, there are other communities hosting similar events and if you browse through the ads of this paper, you may find a night out that fits your schedule. This is a great opportunity to begin your Christmas shopping.
The rifle hunt has now drawn to a close. From reports we’ve heard some camps were successful and others not so much. It’s funny how neighbouring properties can have vastly different outcomes. No news about any mishaps so we’re assuming it was a safe hunt for all. There has also been lots of talk about the antlerless tag distribution around a few tables. A reminder to hunters that Manitoulin Island Meats is a designated ‘Hats For Hides’ depot. Please bring in your hides.
Peter and Janet Fathers returned from England where they visited with Peter’s family. We’re hoping they’ll give us an account of their visit. It’s nice to hear about other countries.
Ingrid Blay’s birthday is coming up November 27. Don’t forget to wish her a happy birthday if you see her out and about.
The season opener curling bonspiel in Gore Bay is being held this weekend to help fund eight Manitoulin Special Olympics athletes attending the National Winter Games Feb/March 2016. The daylight hours are sure shortening. It’s important to get outside during daylight hours to keep from getting the blues. Recent studies have shown that due to decreased sunlight in the northern hemisphere, many people living north of New York are vitamin D deficient and should be taking supplements. Talk to your pharmacist and doctor to see if it would help you.
