Mark your calendar for the next euchre tournament being held on Tuesday, November 24 at the Twilight Seniors’ Centre in the basement of the Centennial Hall in Providence Bay.

The cold weather is approaching and it’s time to service our vehicles and make arrangements to have your winter tires put on for everyone’s safety. On January 1 insurance companies in Ontario are mandated to give a reduction on your insurance rates for installing your winter tires. Please contact your insurance provider for further information.

With the weather getting colder and snow starting to fall, we must remember it’s the time of year where it’s difficult for our seniors and veterans to get out and about. So take some time to give them a call, visit or pick up some necessities for them.

There’s always room for new curlers to join so come out for some fun and exercise this winter season. They have brooms and sliders available for use if needed. If you have any further questions please call Dave at 705-377-4668, Ellen at 705-377-4962 or Donna at 705-377-7078.

Curfling is held every Monday night at the curling club. It’s a fun evening out that combines curling and shuffle board. If you think you might like to try it out, give Wendy a call at 705-377-5734.

The Manitoulin Special Olympics is hosting a season opener curling bonspiel to help fund eight athletes that will be attending the National Winter Games in Corner Brook, Newfoundland in February/March 2016. The fundraiser is being held at the Gore Bay Curling Club on November 27 and 28. Teams are guaranteed three six-end games. Entrance includes prizes and a lasagna supper on Saturday night. What a busy time for the Island with all the hunters here. All the roads and businesses are full and everyone is excited for the upcoming week. We hope everyone plays safe and has a great time enjoying the fruits of nature and great times with family and friends.

Notice for all the hunters! The Hats for Hides program is available at Manitoulin Island Meats (4533 Hwy 551).

The annual Fowl Supper held at the Providence Bay Centennial Hall the Tuesday of the rifle hunt was really well organized with the turkeys being dropped off to all the volunteer cooks over the weekend. Hope you all attended. Stay tuned for next week’s update.

Bob Cranston had a monumental B-Day celebration that was held at his son Rob’s shop which was large enough to house his family and friends for a wonderful BBQ dinner and beautifully decorated cakes. A good time was had by all and we all wish Bob many, many more glorious birthdays.

Get well wishes go out to Gary Bryan, keep your chin up and keep your big bright smiles beaming.

The three-day Great Northern Opry was once again held in Sault Ste. Marie on the first weekend in November. This year was the 26th year for this event. Fifty-three people from Manitoulin Island and seven bus loads of people from across Northern Ontario attended. There were 9 inductees into the Opry and two into the hall of fame. The two Hall of Famers are Don Brose from North Bay and Al Moony from Sault Ste. Marie. Jeff Gilmore and Tim Shaw from Manitoulin were inductees into the Opry. Beth McDougall won the Arnill award which is an awarded given for all her support and dedication to country music over the years. A big thank you goes out to Beth…keep up the great work! If you’re interested in attending this event next year please contact Beth or Glen McDougall the directors of Northern Ontario’s Country Music Association for the Manitoulin district.
