Panther points!
The Manitoulin Panther Novice squad split their two games this weekend. Although they were in tough against the Copper Cliff Major AA squad on Saturday on “D,” Zaagaasge (Zeeeee!) Toulouse made sure she kept her team within striking distance.
On Sunday the Novice Panthers played host to the Nickel City Bears and were tied going into to the third period but managed to get the victory with a 5 to 4 score. Once again Zee was steady on defense and the offence came off the sticks of Kohyn Eshkawkogan, Jack Carter, Gage Hughson and Keannu Bisschops. The young cats have a rest this weekend and then will be ready to pounce next weekend at the Soo Steel Blades Tournament.
The Atom Panthers started their weekend in a well fought road game against the second place Sudbury Lady Wolves. The Panthers were in the very close game, even scoring a goal that was inexplicably waved off. Even though Panther goaltender, Macie Setterington, was stellar, as she commanded her crease the Wolves slipped in two goals. The Wolves incidentally are bolstered by Manitoulin’s Aysia Francis-Debassige and are a force in the NDHL.
The Atoms finished off their weekend at home as the Copper Cliff Minor A squad skated onto NEMI ice. Once again the Atoms spread points out widely between Tryce Francis, Carter McGregor, Aiden Case, Joseph Shigwadja, Brandon Visitor, Owen Leblanc and Jared Toope.
The Atoms have one home game this weekend, Sunday against the Nickel City North Stars in Little Current at 3 pm and then they also prep for the Steel Blades Tournament over in the Sault next weekend. Go Panthers!
The Peewee Panthers sit in 4th of their 10-team division. This Sunday the Panthers take on the Nickel City Thunder at 4:30 pm in Little Current.
The Bantams are tied for second in their 10-team division and look forward to their next home game after they had a strong 3 – 1 showing over the Nickel City Storm last Sunday. This Sunday at 6 pm the Bantam Panthers will host the Nickel City Jr. Sons at the NEMI complex.
Moving on up to the Elder Panthers the Midgets earned their first win of the season at their Steel City Tournament this past weekend. The local squad were competitive in every game but just came away with the two points. The game stars over their four tournament games were respectively: Logan Debassige, Greg Doane, James Scott and Alex Martin. Ethan Corbiere was also an offensive force to be reckoned with over their weekend. The Midgets’ next home game is this coming Tuesday, November 24 at the NEMI Recreation Centre for an 8 pm tilt.
Mustang minute
The Manitoulin Mustang boys’ hockey team will entertain the L’Horizon squad this Friday night at 7 pm in Little Current. The lads will have played (yesterday) Tuesday the 17th at a rare 3 pm road game against St. Benedicts.
The girls’ team also will have played after press time on Tuesday but prepare for next Tuesday’s match against Confederation at 5 pm in M’Chigeeng. The girls’ look to maintain their flawless pre-season record into the regular season. Go Mustangs, go!
BTW…how long will it take Manitoulin to earn a seat at the SDSSA board meetings? Another decade?

Congratulations to Little Current’s Braeden Case who is shutting down the opposition to help his team the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves to the top of the GNML. The Great North Midget League is experiencing much more parity than it has in recent memory and has just three points separating the top six teams, having played between 12 and 18 games. Braeden’s Wolves have a few games in hand, having only 15 matches on record, but will need to keep up the smart defensive work that Case extols on a game to game basis. Although he has just a single goal, the youngster also just has one penalty on his record and more goals saved then you can shake a stick at.
Payette Express
Mitchal Payette notched his second goal of the season to improve the Espanola Express’ record to 4 and 16 last Saturday as the local NOJHL squad shut out the Iroquois Falls Eskis in a road game up in Iroquois Falls. The Express find themselves in 5th place in the western division of the 12-team league. Payette and former Panthers Barry Pitawanakwat and Zach Pregent will lace up against the Powassan Voodoos this coming Friday, November 20 at the Complex in Espanola at 7 pm.
