This past week has been absolutely spooktacular, full of fun activities and sports. Last Wednesday, the students council hosted Pumpkin Pong in the cafeteria. Students were in teams of two and had to throw a rubber eyeball into a hollow pumpkin before their opponents. The participants, win or lose, got candy as a reward.
We Scare Hunger has been extremely successful. The display case in the front foyer of MSS has a big pile of non-perishable food items, from students, staff and community members. The Halloween dance also got many donations for the campaign.
The Halloween dance was a blast. There was great music from DJ Scratchley Q pumping through the cafeteria. The decorations were scary, and even better, there was a haunted hall. When you entered the hallway, it seemed like an innocent birthday party, but then things went wrong. Dinner was a live head, and if you forgot a present for “Emily,” her party clown ran after you with duct tape. To get out you had to crawl through a tunnel. As scary as it was, some people went through more than once. By the end of the dance, everyone was dancing, laughing and having a great time.
The girls’ basketball teams went to Central Algoma on Thursday. Both teams played really well and supported each other through the games. The junior girls had the lead by six points for half of the game before the Huskies passed them. The final score for the juniors was 16-23, another close game. The seniors played their entire game as if it was their last two minutes to live. There was rebounding, amazing baskets, and great defense. The seniors won their game 30-19 and were very proud of themselves on the long bus ride home.
The Reach for the Top trivia team had a great time at their first competition of the year. Emily Hnatyshen said, “We won two games out of six, which was good considering it was everyone’s first time at a meet from MSS.” The team includes Emily Hnatyshen, Hanna Hutchinson, Bryce Mastelko, David Hall, J.D. Herlehy and Sean Patterson.
On Wednesday the 28th, James Scott ran his way to OFSAA Cross Country 2015. James was running in Sault Sainte Marie against around 80 other runners. He placed fourth, finishing his six- kilometre run in 21:47 minutes. James said, “I am really excited to run in Collingwood, and I just hope it isn’t as wet. I was so wet at [the Sault] race, that I forgot what dry was.” Everyone from MSS will be cheering for James as he represents at OFSAA.
The boys’ hockey team played against Notre Dame on Friday, tying 5-5. Dylan Francis, one of the MSS players, said, “The penalties killed us. They scored four out of their five goals on power plays.” The arena was full of cheering MSS students and parents. The boys are all excited for their next game and ready to win.
On the 28th a representative from the Ministry of Transportation came to the school to talk to Mr. Roy’s class. They were talking about the crosswalk campaign that Mr. Roy’s class started last year. Mr. Roy, the Ojibwe teacher at MSS, said, “The results so far are looking positive, but there are still some things to clear up with municipalities and the government.” There will be more meetings with the Ministry of Transportation soon, and the Native Studies class can’t wait to see the final outcome.
The MSS Grade 12 University students are going to see Hamlet broadcast live at Silver City on November 18. The Shakespearean play is starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) as Hamlet. The performance is a live screening from the National Theatre of England. The students and staff who are going are excited, and those who are not going are slightly jealous.
The entire school had a scary, fun week, but are ready to get on track for mid-term tests and marks.
