Wiky Invitational
The annual Wikwemikong Invitational took place at the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course in Manitowaning. Although numbers were down this year the competition was as fierce as always. In the individual race results Zaagaasge Corbiere of Lakeview won the 8 and under race with Wasse Abin’s Natalia Pitawanakwat and Jasmine Staruck taking second and third. CC McLean’s Cody Campbell won the boys’ race with Mathis Bredin and Rylan Pennie both hailing from Assiginack were 2-3.
The 9 – 10 girls’ race was a CMPS, 1 – 2 finish for Delaney Bridgeman and Ava Assinewai. Lakeview’s Maren Kasunick took the bronze. Assiginack’s Brodie Pennie had a commanding lead to win the boys’ race. CC McLean’s Jesse Burella and Jayden Hayden ran to silver and bronze positions.
Shawanosowe’s Avery Sutherland was the class of the 11 – 12 girls’ race, finishing the race with no other runners in sight. Victoria Trudeau and Francesca Pheasant finished in second and third respectively. Nyron Panamick and Johnny Bushey were a 1 – 2 punch for Lakeview while Mindemoya’s Liam Bridgeman rounded out the medal winners.
Marjorie Scott from CMPS won the 13-plus race thanks to her strong training regime. Mya Otosquaiob of Assiginack and Larissa Chevrette of Gore Bay were 2nd and 3rd. Ryan Jones of Assiginack ran away with the god in the boys’ race and Ian Dokum and Gabriel Trudeau both of Wasse Abin were 2 – 3.
In the overall team, aggregate CC McLean took the home the 1st place honours with 13 points! Wasse Abin was second with 11.5 and CMPS was third with 9.5 points. The next event on the X-Country circuit will be in Birch Island as the Shawanosowe Bobcats will host their second annual x-Country meet. The final event will be the Island championships to take place on October 22 in Gore Bay.
Three-Pitch winners
Last week was the annual Manitoulin elementary, 3-Pitch championships. Gore Bay’s CC McLean hosted the junior tournament while Mindemoya’s CMPS invited the Grade 7/8 teams. In the junior event Little Current won the A division title. Congratulations to coach Sherri Toope and her charges: Alexis Bedard, Trinity Behm, Whittier Gauthier, Hillary McBane, Sam Abotossaway-Assinewai, Jared Toope, Riley Lockeyer, Billy Biedermann, Autumn Deschenes, Jenna Taylor, Brett Mastelko and Jared Cortes. Central Manitoulin Public School’s B-team won their division thanks to coach Christa King and players: Annie Balfe, Ben Dewar, Jordan Graham, Garrett Sheppard, Sadie Bridgeman, Sage Van Deyel, Nevaeh Harper, Aiden Case, Abby Heins, Jaylen Ense, Allie Carrick, Lexis Young and Tessa McGillis–Prior.
In the senior tournament, coach Tim Lockeyer led his squad to victory to claim to A-division while Wasse Abin put a round-robin loss to Mindemoya behind them to easily win the B-division. Unfortunately, the two rosters were not available for press time.
Ran for the Cure!
Congratulations to the small Manitoulin contingent who recently ran the CIBC Run for the Cure in Sudbury. Hats off to: Patricia Meehan, Diane Meehan, Sarah Odjig, Tammy Rolston and Kelly Bolduc-O’Hare and the Burns Wharf Theatre Players Crew for participating in this worthy cause.
Babstock nets three
Wikwemikong’s Kelly Babstock scored a hat-trick for her Connecticut Whale squad in their 8 – 4 doubling of the Minnesota Whitecaps. Babstock is playing in the inaugural season of the professional, National Women’s Hockey League. Good luck Kelly!
Wiky Road Race, Sunday
This Sunday, October 18 is the 43rd annual running of the Wiky Road Race. The 10 km Slower Runner Division for beginner runners and walkers is sponsored by the Wikwemikong Health Centre Diabetes Program and it starts at 10 am in Kaboni.
The 10km championship run starts at 10:50 am, with registration going from 8:30 to 9:30 am at Wasse Abin Pontiac School. The entry fee is still just $20 for adults and $10 for students and it includes a t-shirt and a great chance at some fabulous prizes. There is a shuttle service available to get runners up to the start line. It is a great event; why not give it a try. For more information call (705) 859-3164
