Long-time fire chief retires
Council received a letter from Allan Elliot, fire chief of the Assiginack Fire Department, which read: “After more than 42 years on the Assiginack Fire Department and 35 years of them as the fire chief, I have decided to submit my notice of retirement from the fire chief’s position.” He submitted the name of Dwayne Elliott, fire captain, as his nomination for fire chief.
Council passed a motion, accepting Mr. Elliott’s resignation, stating: “And that council sincerely thanks Allan and his family for the decades of service that he provided to our community. Council recognizes that the position of fire chief is one of great responsibility and when those emergencies occur, everything else must be put on hold and the commitment and responsibility of this is appreciated by not only council, but by all residents of Assiginack.”
“I don’t think that anyone can say that Allan hasn’t been committed,” Mayor Paul Moffat stated.
Accounts for payment
Council reviewed and approved the accounts for payment, general, $151,045.18; and payroll, $28,061.35.
Bells honour monarch
Last, Wednesday, September 9, the bells of Knox United Church, St. Paul’s Anglican Church and the Assiginack Museum tolled to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially taking the title of Canada’s longest reigning monarch. She has been the queen since the death of her father, King George III, on February 6, 1952 and today surpasses the record of her great grandmother, Queen Victoria.
Bylaws
Council passed Bylaw 15-25 to authorize the purchase of property by the municipality and Bylaw 15-26 to authorize an agreement with Windows Unlimited for phase two of the municipal office renovations at 164 Arthur Street.
Council also passed Bylaw 15-27 to appoint Dwayne Elliot as fire chief for Assiginack Fire Department.
