KAGAWONG — What kicked off in 2011 as a one-year pilot project by Billings Township and Billings Recreation Committee, the Island’s only off leash dog park has become an overwhelming success. Pet owners from many communities use it regularly to socialize their dogs in a safe environment, away from busy roads and to meet new and existing human friends.
On Saturday, September 12 members of the Rec Committee will host their 5th annual event at the Kagawong Canine Social Club located on Carter Crescent behind the fire hall.
The afternoon includes a social where puppies and small breed dogs can play together in the fenced in area, followed by an ‘all dog’ social when the larger dogs join in the fun.
Organizer Carol Corneau is pleased to say this year’s Bark in the Park will “include Manitoulin Magical Paws Pet Therapy, Island dog breeders and feature a demonstration by certified hunting dog trainer Scott Richer of Working Like a Dog.”
There will be games, a scavenger hunt and lots of fun and socialization time for the dogs, stated Ms. Corneau.
Barbara Erskine, chair of the Billings Recreation Committee, shared, “One of the best things about Bark in the Park is that dog owners meet each other and find playmates for their dogs. It’s also a great introduction to the Park for those who have not been there yet. The games create a fun atmosphere and the socials let the dogs find new friends.”
