St. Joseph’s Island Triathlon
The annual Triathlon and Duathlon on St. Joe’s had a few local athletes competing over the weekend. Congratulations to Deborah McGregor who completed the Olympic distance triathlon (swim 1500m, bike 40 km, run 10 km) and finished in second place in her division. In the so-called, Sprint Triathlon (swim 750m, bike 20km and run 5km) Denis Lefebvre was 4th in his division and Lorrilee McGregor took 3rd in hers.
Aljoe wins Canadian under-16 on the links
Mark Aljoe, son of former high-scoring Panther forward Trace Aljoe, has qualified for the North American Junior Optimist Championships in Florida next summer. Mark captured the Canadian National Junior Championship last weekend in London, Ontario making him the Canadian Junior Optimist Champion for 2015.
No Dennie for 2015
Race founder and organizer Rob Mellan had to make the sad decision to shelve the second annual Dennie canoe and kayak race. After a very successful first year in 2014 a number of things conspired against a race this August. The Manitoulin Tourism Association is really keen to see the race back on the OMCKRA race schedule next year and will do everything it can to make sure the race lives on.
The Dennie is a two-day sage race that starts in Blind River and finishes day one in Spanish. On day two paddlers complete the race to Low Island in Little Current. The race started by Mellan was made as a memorial in honour of the late Dave Dennie.
Ultimate still going strong!
Every Tuesday evening for the rest of the summer there is a fun group of people gathering at the Low Island waterfront in Little Current to play the game of Ultimate, the newest sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. There are a few experienced players and those who have never played so everyone is welcome. The evening starts at 7 pm and goes till 9 pm.
NOJHL preseason games soon
The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League has released an updated 17 game and preseason schedule. The new Espanola Express team along with newly signed Manitoulin lad Mitchal Payette will have a home and home series against the Elliot Lake Wildcats. The two-game set will commence Friday, August 28 at 7:30 pm at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake. They will then wrap-up their preseason action on the Saturday, August 29 with a 2 pm matinee at the Espanola Regional Recreation Centre.
The other as yet, NOJHL signed local player, Tyler King, and his French River Rapids do not have an exhibition game scheduled yet but will be looking forward to their first ever game as a new franchise on September 11 with the Powasson Voodoos coming to Noelville.
Wohlberg up for Hall of Fame voting
Eric Wohlberg (son of Manitowaning’s Elwood Wohlberg) is among 21 cyclists who are on the short list for the inaugural entry of the new Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame. Eric was recently featured in a Sudbury Star column, calling for people to vote for the rider who started riding competitively in the Levack area.
Among his many accomplishments listed include his three consecutive Olympics appearances (1996, 2000, 2004) and winning both the Pan Am and Commonwealth time trials in 1997 and 1998. He of course is up against some stiff competition against relative household names like Clara Hughes, Kurt Harnett and Steve Bauer. You can check out the whole list at www.cyclingcanada.ca.
All-Ontario Native Horseshoe Tournament soon
M’Chigeeng will play host to the 2015 championships next weekend (August 22/23) at the Rainbow Ringers Horseshoe Grounds at 270 Highway 551.
