The Discovery Centre weekly Scavenger Hunt was a great learning experience for all participants about endangered species and the unique alvar ecosystem here in Providence Bay and the Island. There were eight groups and four winners who enjoyed their gift certificate to the Huron Island Time ice cream shop.
Last Thursday about 75 people came out to enjoy live music with renown Island musician Kevin Closs who played a great variety of music including his song called ‘Manitoulin’ for the Sunset Concert Series at the ice cream shop.
There were also 100 Ukranian Girl Scouts who cycled from Tekhummah to Providence Bay this past Sunday. They were visiting from Toronto and cooled off with some ice cream and swim at the beach.
The Providence Bay Coffee Club (at the Curling Club) had 51 people attend the monthly pancake breakfast last Thursday, August 6. There was even a couple from Germany hitchhiking cross Canada. Roy and Debbie (Orford) Revels from Winchester, Ontario were visiting Poppa’s cottage for a family reunion. Alec, Camden and Jace were visiting their great grandparents Sandy and Gloria Sandercott along with son-in-law John Tringham and his wife Louise. The Purdy family from Coniston visited including Dinah, Ryan, Cici and Eli. Gladys Cameron and granddaughter Brenna Ianni from Sault Ste Marie came to visit Becky Smith. Becky and Gladys are long time work buddies from 30 years ago. Gladys writes that Becky is the best lady. Clint Roenisch and Leila Courey rolled through from Toronto. They heard about Becky’s gracious hosting and the friendly atmosphere of the Providence Bay Curling Club. All proceeds from the monthly breakfast go to the curling club. Don’t forget coffee and toast being served weekdays from 7 to 9:30 am. If you want a little bit to eat before heading off for the day.
Matt Young is continuing to receive lots of donated refundable bottles and cans from for the Village/Civic Square project with close to $60 already collected. If you would like to donate it is 5278 Mira St (Hwy 551) next to the Lake Huron Fish and Chips. All of the money collected is being used for the purchase of trees, shrubs, and other materials required for the project.
The 26th Annual Lake Kagawong Bass Derby had 52 entrants. The winners were first place John Kada and Brad Leveille with a weight of 18.96 lbs, second Mike Sprack and Ken Still with a weight of 18.75 lbs, and third Peter McAllitster and Charles Harper with a weight of 18.14 lbs. The awards ceremony and fish fry were held at the Providence Bay Hall. Some fine music was provided by great local talent. All proceeds go to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Many thanks go out to Bill and Linda Taylor, their family, friends, volunteers and local businesses for your hours of work and dedication to this annual event.
Contrary to popular belief, cigarette butts are not biodegradable! Cigarette butt waste is a huge environmental issue, with a global impact—it is both unsightly and unhealthy at our beach. These contribute to pollution in our watersheds when they are thrown in parking lots that get carried with wind and rain into our drains and then washed in to the river and lakes. Please help keep our beach clean by disposing of cigarette butts in the empty ice cream buckets by the discovery centre on the board walk or by putting them out, keeping them and then properly disposing of them in the garbage. Live music this Thursday, August 13 at 8 pm featuring Dan Lalonde. This is a rain or shine event! If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the live music, then join us. This is a pay what you can for the musician.
Wildlife identification walk with the Discovery Centre Students. Learn about some new wildlife species. This is a free event starting at 1 pm on Wednesday, August 12. There will also be a historical walk with Lyle Dewar on Wednesday, August, 26 at 11 am. This will be a condensed one hour version of the fascinating history of this quaint village.
