“More than 300 million people in the world speak English and the rest, it sometimes seems, try to.” Thus begins Bill Bryson’s book, ‘The Mother Tongue: English and How it Got That Way.’ This well-researched little book describes, defines, details, distinguishes and delights—all at the same time. Bryson’s merry romp through the trials and tribulations of the English language is educational, enlightening and oh, so entertaining!
No one does a rant like Canadian satirist and comedian, Rick Mercer! His book, ‘A Nation Worth Ranting About,’ is a virtual banquet of Mercer’s cross-Canada experiences and adventures. It is a broad and varied exploration of subjects—a comical inquiry into topics as diverse as history, politics, sports education, environment an multiculturalism. An honest and amusing look at what makes us who we are—O Canada!
Right and wrong—generations of writers have endeavoured to define the concept. ‘The Light Between Oceans,’ a first novel by M.L. Stedman, is another beautifully-written attempt to do just that. Stedman’s story seeks to establish the ideal balance of honesty and principle. The tale is set on the rugged shores of Australia and contains an ensemble of finely-crafted characters. I am looking forward to future works from this new literary talent.
Norwegian author Jo Nesbo has received recognition and acclaim for his crime novels. His stories and techniques are compared to other thriller writing greats such as Ian Rankin, Michael Connelley and Henning Mankell. His book, ‘The Devil’s Star’ features Detective Harry Hole—a man who works hard, drinks hard and whose relentless pursuit of the truth could have deadly consequences. This is a suspense-filled read!
