Local runner earns berth to Legion nationals!
James Scott, a Grade 9 student at Manitoulin Secondary School was given an invite to July’s Royal Canadian Legion Canadian championships in Quebec. At the District meet in Sudbury a couple of weeks ago, James caught the attention of a Northern Life reporter who gave the young runner a feature interview. James credited his recent experience at OFSAA for his amazing result at the Legion meet. He called it a real “eye opener” and knew that he needed to get a jump right off the gun and not fight to get back with the leaders. In his 800m race, he did just that and finished his first lap in just over a minute. Out in front his goal was to hold on and try to come in under 2:10. In fact he finished in 2:08 eclipsing his old personal best. Although he will unable to attend the provincial meet, that incredible time allowed him to skip the intermediate meet.
Miner’s Mayhem
Some Islanders were at the Adanac ski hill over the weekend for the annual Miner’s Mayhem, a tough, 7km obstacle course that put competitors through all kinds of challenges. There were wall climbs, tire stepping, culvert crawling and more and all done through a healthy layer of mud.
First to complete was Gore Bay’s Greg Bond, who was dubbed a “Hardcore Miner” thanks to his amazing 38:11! Next in was Curtis Flanagan at around 51 minutes then Lisbeth Flanagan around 52! Heather Burella cut 8 minutes off last years’ time at about 54 min! Finally siblings, Andrea Lewis, Drew Patterson and Krista Patterson all finished together at around 1:14. Way to go all!

14th Annual Classic
The Mindemoya Classic run, paddle and pedal triathlon is heading into its 14th running and organizers are hoping for another great year. The event’s motto: “a challenge for everyone” still holds true and organizers encourage everyone to give it a try. The Classic is part of the annual Central Manitoulin Lions Club Homecoming weekend over the Canada Day long weekend. This year the race falls on Sunday, July 5th, the latest it has ever been.
The event is a lot of fun with something from the ultra to the anti-competitive and all for a “can’t-be-beat” price. The race that started out as a co-ed team-of-four event only has grown to include an open pairs division as well as a solo, race category. As part of a team you can choose to enter the relay version where a team of four will have one runner (5.5km), two paddling a canoe (approximately 3.5km) and finally, your fourth person will bike (13km). A relay-pairs team will have one who runs, both paddling and one who bikes. The other way to complete the challenge is to try your hand and feet at the endurance race where all members of your team (4’s, pairs or solo) complete each of the 3 legs with a team of four using 2 canoes.
For more information check out the website at www.mindemoyaclassic.com or search it on YouTube. You can see past years’ photos and results and pre-register (guaranteed t-shirt size on race day and five dollars cheaper!) all in one handy location. If you are still in search of a team or just need one more to make up that foursome drop an email to let organizers play matchmaker for you.
