Central team went on to win Sudbury competition
MINDEMOYA—On April 16, Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) hosted the first Battle of the Books competition. Eight teams from around the Island participated with approximately 45 students.
The players read approximately 30 books in preparation for the competition and had to correctly answer clues for 18 books.
The Central Manitoulin Public School team took first place with 56 points out of 90. Team members included: Haylee Cress, Hailey McGillis-Prior, Aislinn Brown, Laura Orford and Zoe Redmond.
The Little Current Public School teams took second and third place. The second place team consisted of: Katie Chapman, Jared Toope, Whittier Gauthier, Zara Farquhar, Mackensie Graham and Winter Isaac-Nahwegabo.
The third place team members were: Keaton Gauthier, Kat Rose, Trinity Behm, Wyatt Corbiere, Ella Correa, Naomi Naokwegijij, and Alina Arthurs.
The CMPS Battle of the Books team also travelled to Sudbury on April 23 to compete in the Greater Sudbury Public Library competition. The team competed against 10 other schools from the Sudbury area. The team was able to identify all 20 books and received 76 points out of a 100 on their way to a first place victory as the Great Sudbury champions!
The CMPS championship team members included: Laura Orford, Aislinn Brown, Haylee Cress, Zoe Redmond and Hailey McGillis-Prior.
The team worked hard all year to read the books and memorize authors and titles as well as being able to recall characters, themes, and events to answer the clues correctly.
The team would also like to thank Debbie Robinson, Librarian at the Assiginack Public Library, for lending and acquiring the books needed for the CMPS team to read.
